No problem with Virgin,  flown with them on several occasions.  In flight entertainment is good, make sure  you download the app prior to boarding.  Also with IOS devices, make sure that are all up to date.  The wife had issues with her mini ipad which hadn't been used for a long time.  Also on board pricing for food etc is actually quite reasonable.  I think they even forgot to swipe my card properly, so I ended up with a free feed.

Slightly unrelated to the OP but in news today Virgin Australia are culling the Sydney - Christchurch route and making cuts to Sydney - Auckland flights. They've really struggled with load factors since the Air NZ divorce and are making quite a few network changes so they can actually try and become profitable.

I think Virgin's getting out of the Chch- Sydney route has impacted on prices. Booked return a month ago, I don't care who I fly on a 3 hour trip. Emirates / Qantas was cheapest, but at least $100 each return dearer than when my SO went over for the weekend a month or two ago. Anyway, if the A380 service the other day was typical, I'd wonder how long they'll keep going using those planes. I doubt they filled 100 seats. Here's the inside of the cattle class cabin. If Emirates pulls the daily 380 from chch, then the airport will have wasted the effort to widen the taxiway etc:

Flew with them in August to/from Syndey.

On the way over we paid for the upgrade to Business (which is like Premium economy on AirNZ). Can't complain - service was great, and lots of drinks. The meals were fantastic and they supplied us with a tablet for entertainment.

On the way back we turned down the upgrade (we had put in a bid for it both ways and got accepted both ways). The service was fine, meal was OK, only one drink. Had our own devices for IFE - the iPad worked perfectly, Surface Pro would not load the movie (could see the menus etc, was very clunky in windows).

The only gripe I had was that when we booked (start of the year) I had booked for our return flight to land in AKL at about 5PM, leaving us enough time to get home to Waiheke Island without having to stay a night in AKL. They cancelled that flight, so we got moved to one which would have landed about 10pm. I then had to book a hotel as I couldn't guarantee it was going to be on time (an hour late, and we would have missed the last ferry to home). They then cancelled that one, and we actually ended up on a plane that landed at 12.15am. They didn't want to know about me having to book a hotel because they had cancelled the flight I requested. Note - they cancelled those two flights a couple of months before we flew, it wasn't a last minute thing.

Travel insurance would have covered the hotel cost ?

Very few travel insurance policies would cover such an event - and even those that would you'd still need to pay an excess if the insurance policy has one.
