It really blows that insurance cover can just simply exclude cover on the basis that there will likely be too many claims. My daughters classics trip to Italy / Greece has been cancelled as have a number of other NZ schools had their plans cancelled, yet the money paid over in good faith is now gone on the back of the virus.

I get that they may be open to significant losses based on this one event, but isn't that their business?

Insurance industry has far too much power

Some travel insurance isn't worth squat.

We know all that. I simply asked whether he was covered by travel insurance - because not all of it isn’t worth anything.

My mother has a trip to the UK booked for later this year...paid in full before the Virus outbreak.

She looked at her insurance policy and (you guessed it) she's not covered for a global Pandemic.

BUT - she spoke to a legal person at CAB and they advised that she may be entitled to a refund or credit if the trip is cancelled by the airline/travel agent...she has no plans to cancel it and will go if it's not forbidden by someone/something.

@josephhinvest Don’t quite follow your comments:

First: “Will be a huge financial hit if we don’t go.”

Then: “Hopefully many of the arrangements can be put back a year without too much of a financial hit.”

Were you covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance (1-Cover, purchased Sept last year) is not worth the paper it was printed on.

I guess you get what you pay for. A couple of years ago my wife badly broke her wrist in Canada. Our travel insurer flew us home at short notice and covered all Canadian hospital bills plus non-utilised onward flights to the UK and hotel bookings there etc. It cost them $10-15,000 and they were wonderful to deal with from go to whoa.

Not exactly the same situation is it. Who was the cover with in that instance?

Certainly a very different situation - but some people were implying that travel insurance is useless - which is obviously not correct.

In our case it was Southern Cross.

Heard on Newstalk ZB that Princess Cruises has cancelled all cruises for the next 2 months.

While it doesn't affect me I'm flying to Europe at the end of next month. I'm hoping AirBnB relax their cancellation policy. My airfares can be refunded in the form of a voucher.

We should be in Wuhan now, wife and mum in laws home town. Next year, maybe. They are gutted and sad. Emotional toll on them both. But also acutely aware that they are here, not there. The usual trip was wife would go Nov to Feb, so lucky stars there

Interestingly (without reading the fine print yet and taking the agents word) Flight Centre's insurance allows cancellation up to 48 hours prior to departure with 75% refund (even with the current environment), so that is something I suppose

We have a large family cruise booked for April ex Sydney with Royal Caribbean. Thankfully they are allowing cancellations up to 48 hours before hand holding it as credit.

Hoping the cruise is cancel by RC rather than us as then we might have an argument to stand on with travel insurance to get our flights back...

AirBnB have recently allowed hosts to relax their cancellation policy - so it's really up to the host, not AirBnB.

I recently had to cancel my AirBnb with 48 hours notice and got roughly 45% back. not ideal, but not terrible.

Check your hosts policy - thats what matters, not Airbnb's.

We got family travel booked too to Hawaii in April. At this stage still planning to go.

All of our accommodation and rental cars can be cancelled with full refund within 3 days of arrival date.

Airfare purchased with Airpoints so probably lose those in worst case.

I do my best to avoid places with a Strict cancellation policy. I've only once had to cancel and that was about 8 weeks in advance, allowing plenty of time for others to book the host's place. We cancelled because we couldn't get suitable accommodation at an earlier location and had to change the timing of our plans.

Yes I am aware of that however most have a strict policy these days. It is now up to the goodwill of the hosts to provide a full refund vs a 50% refund that is available to me.

On another note, regarding travel insurance, it's silly that they will only look at compensation if the Travel Safe site states a "do not travel" status. You look at Italy's situation and the site still only says "avoid unnecessary travel".

My uncle passed away on Friday night and his daughter, son in law and granddaughter live in the USA. They were booked to arrive into NZ tomorrow, but now with requirement to self isolate for 14 days they've decided to not come as they run a business and were only planning to come for 1 week.

At Easter we also have a friends wedding, but groom and his family are coming from the UK, so unsure what's going to happen there. They currently not due to arrive until 7 days before the wedding.

Our family holiday to Hawaii in April now looking highly unlikely, but will see what restrictions remain after March 30
