I would go to both Wanaka and Queenstown, and go via the Crown Range to get between them (if you are going in summer). Nicer in a car than a campervan, but still quite doable, and it is very scenic.

Are you pre-booking accomodation, or staying in DOC campgrounds etc? It is nice to have power every second night, but holiday parks are surprisingly expensive once you factor in the kids. Lake Alexandrina / McGregor is a possibility in Tekapo, and the White Horse Hill campsite at Mt Cook is a great spot to hang out if the weather is nice.

If you are playing it by ear then I would choose the route based on the weather. If the weather is good, I would go via the west coast. Maybe even go over Lewis Pass and down through Punakaiki, then Fox Glacier (Lake Matheson is a nice spot in the evening) and over Haast Pass to Wanaka.

Generally the weather is good on one side of the alps at a time, it is often raining on the west coast, and warm on the east. If the weather is not good then I wouldn't go via the west coast.

On the east coast you could go all the way down to Moeraki, then go inland at Palmerston through to Naseby. Or you could go down to Timaru and then inland. The clay cliffs at Omarama are interesting but a bit of a detour (15 mins each way).

Thanks, just booked it.

Flying in to Chch on 17th Feb and out from QTown on 24th.

Planning on spending first day in Chch (after reading tips from one of the posters - Margret Mahy Park looks great - thanks @Blurtie).

Will probably do Lake Tekapo/Mt Cook for a couple of days, then Wanaka for a couple of days before finishing in QTown for a couple of days.

Obviously this can change, but we've booked the campervan.

Just saw this thread and was going to say depending on what time your flight is, take an extra day before heading to Tekapo, or head part way the first day. By the time you muck around at the airport, go and get the campervan, load the gear up, sort it all out, it's generally lunch time. Then you still have to drive another 3 hours with (probably) grumpy kids. Sounds like you are onto it though. Skipping Te Anau probably a good call too unless there is something you really want to do there. Hope it's a good trip!

danepak: Thanks all.
In regards to Te Anau, I thought it would be a gorgeous trip on the boat to Doubtful Sound.
But judging by the posts here, we should not bother.

We did that trip recently and loved it. Quite a long day out and largely just enjoying scenery and commentary so younger may need some diversions but for a taste of fiordland it was excellent

Does the below sound feasible for a trip with kids?

Lake Tekapo would be a day of walking, maybe a cold swim and then also hot pools.

Mt Cook would be more walking and maybe a freezing swim too!

Wanaka would be Puzzling World, Wanaka Lavender Farm and maybe indoor climbing.

Queenstown, gondola/luge. Zip line.

Anything to recommend, that I haven't thought of?

Wed 17 Feb: Arrive Chch in the morning and stay overnight

Thur 18 Feb: Lake Tekapo

Fri 19 Feb: Mt Cook

Sat 20 Feb: Mt Cook

Sun 21 Feb: Wanaka

Mon 22 Feb: Wanaka

Tue 23 Feb: Queenstown

Wed 24 Feb: Back home from Queenstown in the afternoon

A walk up Mt Iron is good for views over Wanaka, and the warbirds at the airport are interesting if you like planes

Hi again,

More or less finalised our travel itinerary.

Day 1: Chch in Top 10 holiday park
Day 2: Lake Tekapo holiday park
Day 3: Freedom camping either Lake Pukaki or White Horse Hill
Day 4: Wanaka Top 10
Day 5: Freedom camping in Cromwell
Day 6: Queenstown Top 10
Day 7: Queenstown Top 10

Day 3 is the big question. Really keen on getting as close to Mt Cook as possible, so White Horse Hill sounds perfect. However Lake Pukaki looks gorgeous. Perhaps we can stop at Lake Pukaki on the way to White Horse Hill?

Keen on Hooker Valley track, but 3 hours walk for the kids...?
We’ve got two kids with us (age 8 and 10).

Wanaka - Puzzling World and Lavender farm
Cromwell - Goldfields Mining Centre, checking out fruit orchards and maybe a vineyard or two.
Queenstown - Luge and more
