Another option that i have used a few times is https://turo.com The advantage is you can select the exact car you want. I have used Turo to rent a nice convertable Mustang in Hawaii and recently a very cool lifted Jeep for a month on a four state roadtrip in the US. Obviously there is less "support" available if something goes wrong but I have used this app without any problems at this point. Make sure you look at the total amount in USD though to compare with conventional rental.

But it is a bit of a minefield, when you start looking for specifics the T&Cs that come point you at the the rental agreement, which of course you don't get until you pick up the car. There does appear to be an element of deliberate obscurity and confusion at play.

This! I'm a pretty numbers/details focussed person when booking travel etc, but I find insurance on foreign rental cars a serious challenge.

Hi all,

Update - I ended up booking with Enterprise via their NZ site.

It was ~C$1,400 for a full-size car for three weeks, which includes CDW plus the rest (unlimited mileage, extra airport fees, etc.).

Looking at the Canadian site now, it'd be ~C$1,110, but CDW would be another ~C$670 to C$780.

So going via an overseas site when booking rentals in Canada or the USA definitely seems to be worth checking out.

Other points:

I checked the multinationals that have a presence in both NZ and Canada. Hertz was about the same as Enterprise, Avis was ~25% more and Budget was ~50% more. So definitely worth shopping around.
As another poster mentioned the prices seem to move round a lot - when I checked Enterprise Canada a couple of weeks ago, the price without CDW for the same vehicle class was ~C$1,900 (it's now ~C$1,110). Also definitely worth making a booking with free cancellation, and keeping an eye on prices.
