A while ago, (ok maybe almost a decade), Vodafone had this thing where if you were on prepaid, and you ran out of credit, you could still text and use gprs for a few hours until the system kicked in.

Does this apply now?

If so, I might just book a flight, swap my sim for a prepaid one with $20 on it and download until it stops. I might get 1 GB if i'm lucky.

Beccara: We already have to put up with those people in other modes of transport, Yes the long haul thing add's something to the mix but again why should the ignorant few that will do that rubbish stop my ability to conduct peaceful business on my laptop with a data link rather than be dead weight to my employer whilst I'm in flight.

It certainly makes my case for flights around places alot easier if I'm able to show I can work during the flights

I'm not against mobile data in planes. Only voice calls.

You would not want Windows updates turned on to download automatically

I hope data gets cheaper. I am still surprised to see that almost all major international flight operators do not offer wifi. It's 2011. I don't mind paying $20 for the entire flight. I don't care if it's only 1GB or even 500MB. Just give me wifi on an international flight.

Do whatever you want to do man.

For those of you who think it is expensive please call your neighborhood satellite operator and get a quote for real time two way data. There is no dsl line available at 35,000 feet.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Actually yeah, the one that "a friend" has looks more like a remote for something terrorist related with its antennas and just one button and looking like the case came off the shelf from a cheap project box case shop ;)

Whats to stop people connecting to the ground based networks if they are in a window seat? Last time I flew there was quite a few occasions when I got some XT signal while flying.
