allan: Just a comment about a convertible in Vegas in July. It can get extremely hot there at that time of the year (45C+ for a couple of days when we were there in July this year) and frankly we ended up with the top up and grateful of the aircon.

Yeah, thats a minor concern. But we'll probably only be there a couple of nights. Temperatures in San Francisco & Los Angeles look far more civilised :-)

dclegg: How common is it to not get the car you have ordered?

My wife and I may be going to California June/July next year, and want to order a convertible for a road trip from San Francisco->Las Vegas->Los Angeles. Using the traveljigsaw site, we are given the option of a Ford Mustang convertible at an acceptable rate but it states "or similar". Based on that last part, and comments in this thread, I'm a little concerned that we'll end up with something other than what we've requested. Are there steps to mitigate that risk?

What I do everytime is I ring or email the day before my booking and just say I'm confirming my itinerary and confirming my request for a particular car. I have been upgraded three times that I've done this as they didnt have my car available.

Actually San Francisco was positively freezing with lots of fog every day and we ended up buying jackets to stay warm...

I was in San Francisco for the last couple of weeks of October last year. The weather was quite nice, and I was going out to dinner in t-shirt and jeans up until part way through my second week there.

SF is highly variable. I've been there mid-September. 11 degrees, rain and the need for a jacket! :)
