Sadly I lack the talent, skill, or objects (and less so, inclination) required to make such an item. Loungeroom forts is about my limits sadly.
If we had lots of trees I might consider it.

Killerkiwi2005: Don't like camp grounds either, too crowded
There's plenty of cheap doc camp sites, the doc website is pretty good

A gas cooker or small bbq is ideal

How do you do proper camping here? That is - throw small tent in backpack, head into wilderness and camp wherever you feel like it?
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Man that would make you worse than me at DIY!! Since I generally regard that to mean "Don't Involve Yourself" that would be a hard achievement!
OK
1) Buy some 2x4 timber (or whatever the metric version of that is)
2) Cut 4 lengths (equal) that you can screw together at the top so they open like scissors to make a V (wide end on ground)
3) get another length of 2.4 and rest it on top of the 2 inverted V shapes as a ridge pole, tie with string or whatever is to hand
4) Throw tarp over, peg to ground, make a guy line or two from string and peg.
Just pretend you are stranded in the wilderness following a plane crash - that should help!
PS Do you have a silver BMW estate car?
SepticSceptic: Camping requirements change over the years. First few times I went camping, it was togs, towel, sleeping bag + beer. And a pup tent.
Then with kids in tow, it was an A4-sized checklist, covering everything from antacid to Zoggs. (Zoggs are swimming goggles).
Sans kids, list is a wee bit shorter - don't need to accommodate all their paraphernalia, but still a long-ish check list just to make sure our camping is "comfortable".

Yes? How did you know? Are you the guy putting an offer on it ? :)
I'd agree to not being much of a DIY guy, I usually consider it more cost effective to pay other people to do stuff around my house :)
I'll have a think about making the tent but realistically, I'd have to buy almost everything including tools to cut the wood etc, a tarp, string, pegs etc :-) :)
I have a bit of furniture in a box still from 12 months ago I just never get around to making.

I know all manner of things (as my wife will attest to - she often asks me how I know things, to which I usually reply "because I pay attention"!)
I saw one in Auckland at the weekend (I was house hunting) and the number plate matched your screen name! I guessed it may be yours. So either it was, or someone has an identical car and a number plate that you should buy off them....
Just buy a Leatherman and build it with that - think how cool and MacGuyverish you will appear to your offspring!

Yah well interestingly MacGyver was my favourite role model as a kid, and my sons middle name is..... MacGyver :)
I probably need to set a decent example and will give it some thought.

So glad it wasn't Knight Rider - he may have ended up called KITT!!
So was that your BMW?

Ha! How funny. I wish I could tell you where I was when I saw it but Auckland mostly looks all the same to me I am afraid!
Somewhere between the Pullman and Titirangi, since that is more or less the only route we took all weekend.
