For those who have been to New Caledonia, is there anything in particular that you would recommend doing there? Or is it just a matter of picking a nice resort and drinking cocktails by the pool?

I learned to (sort of) wind surf there. We also did a few hours on a few of the islands as part of a tour, had lunch etc.

We took the jetski tours and they were pretty cool as well.

Just be aware, unless your French is pretty good, you should speak English, some places appreciate the effort, but they don't :)

Thanks - will keep that in mind.

My French is reasonably good but not perfect. It's a shame, because practicing my French was one of the attractions!

You can hire a car and drive round the island which is quite cool. You can even do it over a couple days and stay the night in a gite

I've never understood why, on an Island like Fiji that gets 9 flights + a day from places like NZ and Australia, why they don't bring milk and fresher meat in. It's crazy how bad the food is in Fiji to what it SHOULD be.

We were on this REMOTE island in the Maldives, and we had the most amazing food (I don't even mean by Island standards). Obviously, all brought in (except the fish and some fruit and veges which were grown locally).

Can't agree more. I've been 5 times to Maldives (enjoyed just 4-5hrs flight from European part of Russia) and food never was an issue.

+1 Maldives = brilliant, but a mission to get there.  Stayed at 2 different resorts, mid range and top end, and while the food at the top end one was probably better we actually enjoyed the more casual and friendly atmosphere at the cheaper one, and it had a better house reef for snorkeling to boot.

Off to Niue in a couple of weeks for more diving (humpback whale season), so can report back on that one in a month or so :-)
