but having flown southwest 2 weeks ago I can tell you they still do the watch the hostie put the masks somewhere in the general area of her face...Don't touch the makeup!...

I much prefer the 45 second: belts, mask, exit, tray table go! than the New Zealand stop reading we are going to show you some stupid actor you have never heard of touring Antarctica, a couple of all blacks, and use so many local colloquialisms that foreigners are guaranteed to have no idea what we are talking about for the next 5 to 6 minutes

I thought it was just me but I have found Air NZ’s folksy and ‘innovative’ safety videos using ‘celebrities’ over the last few years to be smart-arsed, smug, self-indulgent, too long, and almost unprofessional as a result. Certainly make me cringe too. Like you, I would prefer a short n sharp, direct simple Kiwi approach. But I’m a grumpy old fart.

Yes. Short, factual and a reminder that its VERY important. Then its done before disinterest and distraction kick in

This is all just another media beat up and it shows how ignorant and ill informed the media are.

Let's imagine for a moment that we know nothing at all about how these masks work and how oxygen is delivered to passengers in a decompression incident.

How many passengers died from lack of oxygen on this flight? How many passed out? How many showed even mild symptoms of hypoxia?

The answer is none. Surely that should tell us all that there was no big deal with the way that passengers were using the oxygen masks?

How can that be? Why did they not all pass out or worse?

Here is the big secret, if you are at the top of cruise - say 39000 feet - you can put one of these masks on over your mouth, keep your mouth closed and breath through your nose and you will still be OK.

How can that be?

The mask is not designed to replace all of the air that you breath. Even if you put the mask over your mouth and nose, most of what you inhale will still be cabin air sucked in around the edges of the mask.

The mask is just adding a little extra oxygen to the mix. Enough to keep you well.

So what would happen if you put the mask over your mouth and breathed only through your nose?

That little trickle of additional oxygen would come out of the cup of the mask and get into the air surrounding your face.

Then you breath in through your nose and you suck in most of that extra oxygen anyway.

You will certainly suck in enough to keep you going,

I'm not sure if you are getting this information from aircraft manuals or just extrapolation from anecdotal sources.

1. If you have the mask over the orifice you inhale from, you get all the oxygen from the mask + hypobaric air around.

2. Which may not be a lot, but a lot more than breathing air in the generic vicinity of the oxygen mask. You cannot magically grab all little the oxygen going away from under the chin, around the cheeks, etc by inhaling from the nose.

3. I cannot find out the amount of oxygen produced by the reaction of the chemicals in the oxygen generator. But let's say it is 1L/min. (Pressurized oxygen tanks can easily go beyond 15L/min but you want to minimize the flow to maximize the duration. When you normally breathe, it's about 500ml per breath, over 1 second. Then you don't breathe for about 4 seconds. The oxygen flow out of the oxygen generator does not know when you are breathing, and will always give out that made up 1L/min of flow. So in normal breathing (which won't be normal when you are in panic mode), you will only take 1000ml/60s = 17ml of that oxygen per breath. Hence there is a reservoir bag which tries to store as much oxygen as possible from that flow when you are not sucking out of the mask-tube contraption, so that when you generate negative pressure upon that reservoir bag you hopefully get more than 17ml from your breath. Which won't happen when you breathe through your nose with the mask over your mouth. Double whammy.

4. Granted, as most experts here have said, the aircraft descends very rapidly so you don't really need extra oxygen, as breathing slightly hypobaric air (which by the way still has 21% oxygen, no matter the altitude. it's the partial pressure that changes) is not detrimental.

Glad to hear you say that. I thought it was just me but I have found Air NZ’s folksy and ‘innovative’ safety videos using ‘celebrities’ over the last few years to be smart-arsed, smug, self-indulgent, too long, and almost unprofessional as a result. Certainly make me cringe too. Like you, I would prefer a short n sharp, direct simple Kiwi approach. But I’m a grumpy old fart.

I quite liked the Singapore Airlines safety videos - not entirely clinical, but not juvenile like the Air NZ ones.

In fact, sometimes the Air NZ flight attendants look slightly embarrassed when the safety video starts playing.

Personally, I'm over the ANZ safety videos. They were a good marketing idea but like anything good it has been flogged to death. They go on and on and even though I have flown a fair amount I never want to be that guy that ignores the safety messages so the extra long videos is a PITA. Just give me the absolute basics quickly and coherently and play any other marketing material later that I can ignore without feeling like a prick... /rant.

Interestingly, we traveled on United in the US. They had a safety video that mimicked what Air NZ had achieved but their's was really bad.
The only thing about the latest Air NZ video is I wish they had got an actor who could pronounce AntarCtica correctly.

Agree. Social media works on the basis of PLUS one more step forward to a "like". It does not however work on the basis of "not liked as much as "blah... blah .... blah"," because that is easily recognized as a STEP BACKWARD.
