I'm not the original poster, more interested in techniques in general (since it is hard to sort these out yourself on a single airline's website). Agree it's a pretty good price!

We have tried a few of those sites like Expedia. Tried in the sense of 'looked at' but didn't actually book anything. We settled on Expedia and have used it to book something like 40 international flights over the past ten years - most of which were long-haul. Have never had a hiccup or any issues.

Having said that, last trip we were booking return flights Auckland > Lisbon and booked with Emirates direct on their website. This was because we wanted to pay their small surcharge fees to select specific desirable seats in economy - and you can't do that bit via Expedia.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Appreciate all the advice - I will update once we finalise plans and certainly ask the agent how they get those fares. We're yet to finalise dates, and also working with two agents (one of whom is looking at a RTW ticket so will likely come in more expensive than the $9,800 estimate we already have).

From what I understand the estimate is for Singapore Airlines on the CHC - SIN and SIN - FRA sectors, unsure about LHR - ORD (Chicago), and Air NZ from LAX to CHC via RAR (Rarotonga) and Auckland.

That's pretty neat - good airlines. Presumably you get to stop in RAR which is cool (strange routing otherwise)

This article might be a bit dated but is quite detailed and interesting. It says these competitive fares are a sort of 'RTW' ticket, not collections of one-way fares, and hard to book online. Seems to match your experience!

Great article - and really mirrors my experience and the views shared by other posters in this thread. The last paragraph makes a really good point:

"To be fair to Star Alliance, you could have five stops for the same price so in your comparison you're not really getting the most value from those fares," says Roundabout Travel Managing Director Mark Trim. "The One World and Star Alliance RTW tickets work really well for people who want to do a six to 12 month trip, with 10 to 12 stops to get the most out of their tickets, but there are a lot less of those travellers. The vast majority of our clients are travelling for four to eight weeks with two to five stops and they're happy to tack on another continent to the trip."
