Is there any risk in using Transferwise? i.e. losing your money??

I have used transferwise to transfer funds to family and I know a number of people that have done the same.

They did required identification for my transfers, this is to curb money laundering. 

It is the same with the debit card

I have been using transferwise since they made borderless accounts available to NZ in December 2018.

I use it for regular transfers from USD in Paypal to NZD and then withdrawing to my NZ bank account. I have complete more than 15 transfers of more than 2k and always found it to be fairly fast and very reliable.

Prior to TW boardless accounts I would Withdraw USD straight to NZ bank account, this was slower and paypal took more in fees. With TW I am saving $150+ per transfer.

TENKAN: ... i feel a little uneasy about with this, and that is having to give these people your complete identification to sign up ( I understand that they need to know who they are dealing with, just like a bank) as we don't really know who the company really is or the people that are handling our personal details, ... so is everyone ok with giving all your details to TransferWise? Did you really have to send copys of both your license and passport to them?

Disclosure: I am a banker. I have worked closely with TransferWise. I know many of their global operational people and their processes. I trust them as much as I trust my own organisation. 

I have personally signed up with them. I provided copies of ID. I am not worried. 

I set up my TransferWise account when we started travelling nearly 5 months ago, a month ago I received their notification that the debit card would now be available for us Kiwis, applied for that and it was waiting for me when I got home last week.

They make a lot of sense to use to me because I'm not penalised for having an empty currency account like a lot of the travel cards do. They also charge a lot less and I don't get silly "overseas transaction" thingies in my regular accounts.

One of the reasons I was interested in getting an accoutn with them was for when I start listing my books on Amazon- if you want to sell in a different region with Amazon you need to list it in that region's site, and also sort something for receiving payment from that region - no it is NOT all aggregated for their book/ebook sales. TransferWise gives me a great tool to receive in multiple currencies, change them all to NZD then pay into my regular NZ bank account. 

I have transferred funds from NZ bank into my NZD TransferWise account, then converted to Euros, spent Euros in Europe, then once we sold our vehicle converted to NZD then back into my NZ bank - less fees, easier and quicker than any of my previous financial finanglings 

i signed up both myself and then my wife on the same day  (i was first), and she got her card 9 days earlier than me. pretty odd but atleast it did come.

that is good to hear also going to HK soon and have added HK funds to the card. did you use any of the ATMs in HK to withdraw cash from the card?
