For backpack I am seriously considering this;

There are some things it doesn't tick the box for but hard to beat for the money. I would love it if it opened fully, but I've never had one that does, and pulling my laptop out is something I do most places anyways.

SpartanVXL: Unless your bag looks excessively massive and won't fit in overhead I don't think I've ever been stopped for weight limits (on airNZ). With laptop and various things I've gone through with 8-10kgs carry-on, all within volume restrictions.

I've seen them weighing and been weighed twice. They do it in the lounge after security. Just walk around with those hand hanging scales and lift up everyone's carry on. I still wouldn't mind it enforced. I hate it when you get near your seat and there's no room overhead for a laptop bag. Honestly some people take the mickey, carry on, large purse and something else.

I mean, I've only been though Auckland airport but after security is a whole bunch of shops, cafes/burger king. Do they just wander around and weigh random peoples kit? I've never seen that before. I wander up to the gate maybe 5-10min before boarding and don't see anyone getting weighed while in line or waiting for their callup.

And I suppose for every person taking 10kg theres usually a person only with their phone, headphones and neck pillow. I reckoned thats why they never really bothered to check/enforce.

I've never really noticed airNZ recently missing an opportunity to charge a little extra when they get the chance.

I think they go through periods where they focus on certain things. I've never been charged overage for luggage, mostly because I have done a fair bit of travelling with them, but there was a period of time a year ago they were being very hard on extra weight.

I frequently see people taking significantly more than their carry on allowance on board. It's particularly bad on short haul international trips.

Carry-on allowance on AirNZ does depend on frequent flyer tier. Gold elite is 10kg + 5kg IIRC, plus a small handbag or equivalent.

I've never been stopped from travelling anywhere with a suit roll, carry on bag and laptop brief. But I do mostly fly within star alliance and usually premium or business for long haul.

So the result was that I ended up buying both the Samsonite Xenon 3 Back Pack in NZ and took that instead of a roller bag, and then I ordered the Samsonite roller Bag from Bagworld which was $70 cheaper over there (the backpack was $30 but I needed something for the plane).

The backpack was good. Very different from my prior roller bag. It's very good quality, spacious, and opens completely, which I found good and bad. As expected NZ customers forced me to remove everything rather than just split it open. I used the backpack every day when out and about in Melbourne. it's surprisingly heavy for a backpack and I noticed that. It had plenty of space for the shopping I did bar one day. It took me quite a while to recall where everything was stored, so I constantly opened the wrong compartment. It's a nice looking bag too and not too bulky.

I got my roller bag in Australia and packed that upon my return, I think I prefer the rollerbag for travelling, but will keep the BP for day trips out etc. I also ordered the Matetin 15.6 backpack I linked from Amazon, which was $70 incl shipping. I'll compare and decide, but I suspect I'll keep the Matein as it has a few features I like.

The BP weights in at 1.2KG I think and the Roller was 2.1. For convenience I'm happy to have the extra weight.

I'll post back one the Amazon bag arrives.

I once lost my passport for a while before stumbling across it in an obscure pocket of a Columbia back pack I have that has lots of useful little compartments. To do this day if I can't find something, my SO suggests that I check that bag.
