Trans-Tasman bubble loophole!

Will allow Australians to visit countries beyond New Zealand without getting permission to do so from the federal government's Border Force.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/124792281/transtasman-bubble-the-new-zealand-loophole-that-benefits-australian-travellers

And then have to apply for permission to return anyway, since they'll need to quarantine in either NZ or Australia at their own expense. This is not a loophole at all.

Was not envisaging it in terms of short-term tourism (quarantine requirements would make that unattractive).  But for people who have urgent family reasons, longer-term work or family commitments or similar it is a practical workaround.  At least they can go without jumping through bureaucratic loops

yes, Although I would imagine the OZ government might take a dim view of it should they apply to come back into OZ via their MIQ system....

(as they would not be eligible to come into NZ MIQ)

Travel Bubble Chaos? The 'chaos' is at MIQ so the bubble means they don't need to go near the chaos at all... so no issue :)

The Aussies will blame us regardless for any cases hahaha

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

You don't apply to enter Australia's Hotel Quarantine system - Home Affairs has zero visibility of you until the APIS messages are transmitted for the flight.

Hotel Quarantine spaces are auctioned to airlines, who then decide who gets them. For the most part that means that when spaces are low, airlines cancel tickets in ascending price order (Qatar Airways is literally the worst for this). If you successfully board a plane and it goes wheels up with you still on it, you have a space in Hotel Quarantine.

It's mean that many of the problems NZ has had (people sitting online for 24 hours refreshing the page hoping for a spot to pop up) haven't occured, but it turn it's also given the airlines the opportunity to basically force people to buy business class tickets if they wanted to travel if that's all they want to make available.

heh imagine all planes become business class only. that would make travel amazing. (and expensive, but it already is anyway)

A good summary from Stuff on what to do and look out for with traveling to OZ (including links for the pre-departure approvals needed):

Trans-Tasman bubble: The ultimate guide for Kiwi travellers heading to Australia

and a summary of the various tracing apps you may need depending on the state:

COVIDsafe isn't mandatory, and anyone who's used it would probably say don't do it - it's a nasty battery hog and has dubious actual benefit. It does not use the OS provided exposure notifications API like NZ COVID Tracer does.

You'll love that Check In CBR, Check In QLD, Territory Check In, Check In TAS are all literally the same app with a different colour scheme - so installing four of the same app (because they deliberately report to different backends) is fun.

Contrary to some comments on the Stuff article, most state apps do give you a history of checkins. However bear in mind none of the four above listed require a check out so you have to play a bit of guessing if you see that a venue you've been to has been marked as a contact tracing venue.

I'm so very pleased for the people reunited with family today and in the near future. I'm very envious.

I don't get why they can't leave well enough alone.

The current MIQ was bad enough (too many allowed in and not strict enough quarantine), but this is just asking for trouble.

Certainly was touching to watch and great that the airports went the extra mile to celebrate with bands and drinks.

I have to wait till mid June Oz school holidays to see my grandchild, we don’t dare say anything in case it all turns belly up. $750 for her tickets from Sydney. Add cost of a parent back and forth twice to drop off and pick up because they won’t allow unaccompanied children now, reunion has become an expensive exercise.

So hard for those in countries that are excluded but, at least the option of managed isolation is still available and most likely there will be far more spaces now and easier to book them.

Saw plenty of suit cased packed cars on the Auckland southern motor way (airport bound) this morning while heading into work

MIQ capacity is reduced by ~50% so no it's not a lot easier and still remains totally impractical for most. You get that on the big jobs.

Rather envious of some on the news tonight. It was actually difficult to watch. Haven't seen our son for over two years now. Being that he's in the UK it'll probably be, at the very least, another year before we meet up again.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.
