In the current climate looks like the USA can do no wrong in Nationals eyes. There's more countries in the world then the USA so why prioritize them?

Trade deal no good if it gives up aspects our sovereignty and USA trade deal will take more then they give, so trade deal yes, but not at any cost.

https://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/national/us-at-centre-of-nationals-foreign-policy-bridges/ar-AABBptC

By give up our sovereignty I mean where laws of  NZ have to be changed to suit USA, like one contentious one is our parallel importing law.

They don't like Pharmac either.

To be Honest, they are stirring and trying to annoy Winston

When you read it in context of these comments from Winston last week, its clear that National trying to drive a wedge between NZ First and the Greens in Govt...

14 May, 2019 9:27am

"Foreign Minister Winston Peters is making positive sounds about a long sought after free trade agreement between New Zealand and the world's biggest economy, the United States.

New Zealand does not have a free trade agreement with the US, despite various attempts over the years to secure such a deal.

But speaking to RNZ this morning, Peters hinted that recent progress had been made.

He said there was still life in a US/NZ free trade deal.

"We have expectations that we have taken the matter a whole lot further recently."

Peters said he's had conversations with US Vice-President Mike Pence about this very matter, who assured him work was being done to progress the deal.

He said he was working "very seriously" on securing the lucrative trade deal between the two countries.

Where's the part in the article that says National wants to give up our sovereignty to the US?

I said " trade deal no good if it gives up aspects of our sovereignty....." To me if we have to change existing laws for a trade deal then the government is giving power to another country,  if we don't have to change laws then fine.

And in article it had "

Mr Bridges also committed to "aggressively" pursuing a free trade deal (FTA) with the US.

"We do have to win Washington's trust and attention ... and have the political will to follow it through".

Political will to follow it through, if it takes political will it sounds controversial, and those words make me think they prepared to give up a lot, which is why I had sell out NZ in title.

If you have another interpretation of those words, feel free to share.

I read that RNZ report.

It was so poorly written, I wasn't sure what he (Simon) really said. - write it again RNZ.

Simon was reported as saying .. the 'abhorrent disregard for democracy and human rights in Venezuela.

It should be obvious that the current US Warlords want to acquire the oil reserves of Venezuela and Iran and seem intent on provoking a war against both those countries.

They will use 'freedom' in the propaganda.

But, 'freedom' is not what they are after and the lives of the people in those countries are irrelevant to them.

I hope not all of our politicians are sucked into this BS.

From Newsroom:

Take the plan to “aggressively pursue” a free trade agreement with the United States, as Bridges put it.

“They clearly have history with us, we share common values, we’ve fought together, and what is also true is this is an $18 billion relationship with a superpower but that has room to grow.

That all may be true, but given US President Donald Trump’s protectionist instincts and his administration’s ongoing trade war with China, now would not seem an opportune time to pursue a deal - something noted by former diplomat and MFAT official Charles Finny, who pointed out there would be “some very tough asks” of us in exchange for a poor agriculture offer.

Bridges was somewhat dismissive, suggesting Finny’s position was one “that some of the boffins will have” and pointing to the former TPP trade deal (now the CPTPP) as a potential template for a bilateral agreement.

That seemingly ignores the fact that the most unpalatable aspects of the TPP for Kiwis, including extensions to copyright terms for intellectual property and biologic medicines, were inserted at the behest of the US - and it was their removal following Trump’s withdrawal which made the CPTPP an easier pill to swallow for New Zealand.

Before bending the knee and pledging fealty to King Donald of The House of Trump, Bridges should perhaps look a bit deeper into the "sharing common values" claim.

NZ has opposed the US in more sane times.  (ie anti-nuclear policy).

We've fought together with the US in WW2, since then on the occasions when we have fought with them, it's often been a tactical and humanitarian mistake/disaster.

NZ is headed in an ideological (if not yet in practice) completely different direction on global environmental policy.

NZ free trade bipartisan policy has been to avoid weaponisation of trade. I'm not aware of any great success of US unilateral sanctions as a method to change the mind of what the US considers rogue states, the Castros still run Cuba, the Kims N Korea, there's an anti-US government in Iran.

Anyone can make a thread, so anyone could’ve made one at time.

Winston one didn’t have same language as Bridges one, so didn’t indicate was selling our souls for one which is why I didn’t make thread.

He better not give up to much either.
