This shouldn't have to be in Politics but I suppose it must.

I live in Hastings. Every time I search for something, I get Hastings UK. I always have to specify NZ and that really annoys me, which is the thread I wanted to place this in.

I don't see why (Pākehā) people get so worked up about name changes, especially changes to Maori words. Why not? Most places had Maori names to start with.

I would really like to see Hastings renamed to Heretaunga, which I understand is the Maori name for it. The name is easy for non-Maori to pronounce without mangling it too badly, it has a nice ring, it is distinctive and pleasantly exotic, and it doesn't carry the decaying odour of a distant colonial power.

And when I search for Heretaunga, at least I won't get hit with all kinds of irrelevant stuff about a battle of knights that occurred a thousand years ago.

Regards your search results bringing UK places I'd bet you have the OS set to English(UK) and your browser is set to English(UK). Google will get the cues and get results for UK, not NZ.

I still think Hastings should have a name that reflects its own history, instead of someone else's.

Edit: Language settings are necessary to prevent everything defaulting to bloody USA.

Who puts the month before the date, for chrissake?

Are you using English (UK) or English (NZ)? Nothing to do with English (US).

It seems to be set to English UK on my laptop, not sure about the PC (in another room) because I only recently changed to Win 10 and am still having issues with MS defaults. But I know it used to be set to NZ and I still got all the Hastings UK crap.

Confirm they are set to English (NZ). Also on google.com you have settings at the bottom - make sure it's "Current Region" (if your computer is correctly set to English (NZ)) or click [Show more] and select New Zealand.

Oh, the browser too - if you installed the browser as English (UK), change it to English (NZ). Here is Microsoft Edge Chromium. There is no good reason to use anything different while here:

OK thanks. I will look into it tomorrow. Am now in the lounge with TV, drinks, cats, warm fire and other worthwhile distractions. I still think Hastings should be named Heretaunga. It just rolls off the tongue so much better.

My Mac is set to English (NZ) and a search fir Hastings only gave any NZ results

I agree re Heretaunga. The vast majority of names are Maori names. Helps with the diversity this country struggles with, and its a NZ name not a Colonial name

No. It's not "bcos some Pakeha racist".

It's because "bcos some Pakeha are racist."

FTFY.

I just checked the PC and it was indeed set to UK. I still think Hastings should have a non-invader name.

Example is Catherine Beuning. She complained a few times when Vodafone started using Aotearoa as the network name - more than once.

If you search Catherine Beuning you will find submissions to Tauranga Council like this one (PDF):

"There should be a mixture of Non Maori and Maori names. Giving exclusivity is a big mistake. Remember that Maori are 14 - 16% of New Zealanders. "

That's her argument. It's racist.

I think Catherine Beuning is probably unhappy now to have been in the news so much that her name is linked to this kind of attitude, forever.

New Zealand is named after a province in The Netherlands. It isn't even spelt correctly. Aotearoa makes a lot more sense.

There are three parts to that argument (although parts 1 and 2 are essentially saying the same thing).  I'd be interested to know which part(s) you think would need to be changed to make it NON-racist argument.

Take all her other comments about the "Aotearoa" sign on Vodafone mobile network with that to get context.
