Well, I did the math wrong and thought it was 800 trees per second, but it's actually 8000 trees per SECOND. You can judge for yourself how realistic that is :) The population of Ethiopia is 114M.

Almost as credible as 100K houses in 10 Years ;)

Many reputable news sites, including the BBC, are reporting this figure. It looks genuine to me.

I get a sense that Simon Bridges is trying to imitate Trump, in style, if not substance, with his recent attacks on the government and Jacinda Ardern. Just to be absolutely clear, I am not at all suggesting that he is being racist or any of the other things that make Trump so despicable. I don't think he is. But the manner and formulation of his criticisms seem to me to have a kind of Trumpish quality to them. Does anyone else see this or am I just having vapours?

Shared by a friend in a recent discussion around 350M trees:

About those trees....

It seems India had the previous record of 60m in a day, using a workforce of 800,000 volunteers.

At the same rate of work, Ethiopia would have needed a workforce of >5.5m participants

All the imagery online shows only a handful of individuals at work, and none of it depicts any stockpile of seedlings of any magnitude.

It appears that the “proof” of the planting rests predominantly on a tweet from an Ethiopian Minister claiming that 353,633,660 seedlings were planted

I wouldn't put any stock in who reports something, more than I would, a lack of any evidence to support such a claim. 8000 trees a second for 12 hours. Not absoloutely impossible, but ludicrously unlikely in my view.

The Ethiopians have corrected the figure. They now say it was 353 million trees.

My radical plan to slash emissions is to cut Wellington off from the rest of the country.

Don't even need to make it the whole of Wellington. The planet temp would drop about 2c if we just removed the beehive. The reduction in hot air would be huge :)

Even more if the critics of the government were also chucked in the pit.

Well, actually, if you think about it, if you take step one, step 2 isn't required since 2 won't exist any more by default..

If you make crime legal, you can close the prisons. Same logic.

Some noises from Phil Twyford about Light Rail, but still bizarrely focused on the isthmus branch, apparently due to 'bus congestion'.

I'll give everyone one guess as to why there isn't 'bus congestion' in North West Auckland.

There is, however thousands of new houses going in in the Westgate area, without so much as as an Outer Link or Busway in sight. Meanwhile, apartment developments on the actual LRT route on Dominion Road get knocked back by the Council.

and if you do away with the critics then the Government are no longer incompetent :)

Won't stop the hot air though..

It seems incredible. I did wonder if some of these was potting seedlings or the like. The minister tweeted throughout the day as totals grew and came in from various regions: https://twitter.com/DrGetahun

The Ethiopian Minister's nose certainly grew a few feet, that's for certain.

Labour is drip-feeding their cancer care policy atm. Not sure you can realistically attack the Nats for launching policies when you're only following through on your election promises if the attacks for not doing so start to get traction.
