I get a sense that Simon Bridges is trying to imitate Trump, in style, if not substance, with his recent attacks on the government and Jacinda Ardern. Just to be absolutely clear, I am not at all suggesting that he is being racist or any of the other things that make Trump so despicable. I don't think he is. But the manner and formulation of his criticisms seem to me to have a kind of Trumpish quality to them. Does anyone else see this or am I just having vapours?

If you draw a long enough bow, you can probably find a comparison to Trump with every politician in NZ.

There's a cabinet minister with a billion dollar slush fund who wore a "Put New Zealand First Again" hat during the 2017 campaign.

But sure, Bridges is the Trumpesque one.

I guess the difference, if there is one, is that Bridges is leader of the opposition and, as such, the main voice of government criticism in parliament. I have to say I find his manner to be extremely grating, really irritating, and I'm not talking about his accent. Whatever the substance of his criticisms, he comes across sounding petty, whiny, and mean-spirited with his little pursed mouth. There is just something really annoying about him. I don't like Judith Collins any better than him, but she certainly doesn't annoy me in the same way. If I listen to her speak, it is usually what she says that annoys me. With Bridges it is just the way he says it. He could say he agreed with all of Labour's policies and had decided to join Labour and I would still find him annoying.

Smarmy, I guess, is the word you're looking for.  All politicians are smarmy in my view, but the level of smarmyness does vary a lot among them.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I wonder what will come of this? I presume it will be swept under the carpet as per the last Labour Party scandal. They will announce someone has been moved to a cushy position somewhere else on the same day there is another significant event. I think the Ethiopian Government and Labour must share the same definition of transparent.

There could well be something to this but it is a little premature to be leaping to gleeful conclusions on the basis of what has been published, or especially, the sources behind it. I do not consider Newstalk ZB (which gave Cameron Slater a home), Hosking, or the Herald to be unimpeachable sources for anything relating to Labour.

So you are happy to believe Ethiopia planted 353M trees in 12 hours with no physical or supporting evidence other than a tweet, but not this, for which there is precedence and for which JA looks visibly uncomfortable discussing and is using politico talk to avoid like the plague (apparently alleged Sexual assault is a party matter and doesn't involve the police!) ?

I am happy to believe what every reputable media source in the world has reported, including but in no way limited to the BBC, Reuters, the Smithsonian, the New York Times, Science20.com, and pages and pages and pages of newspaper, TV, and other links on Google. Nowhere have I been able to find a single source questioning this figure. Except you, of course. Not having been present there myself, I am inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to the literally thousands of credible news and other organisations that all say this happened. Of course it could always just be a vast fake news conspiracy. Was the Ethiopian president telling porkies? I would then expect at least one news source to question his figures, or ask how he arrived at them. None has. Until I hear otherwise, or the Guinness Book of Records says it ain't so, I will take  them at their word.

Unlike Newstalk ZB, Hosking, or the Herald, which hardly have a spotless record for politically neutral truth-telling. If you think I am being excessively credulous for believing the word of the Ethiopian president, I can only respond that you are displaying a disturbing eagerness to find deception in a momentary facial expression of our own leader. How can even you take this as evidence of anything? I hope you are never given prosecutorial powers if your idea of proof is the way someone's face looks. That has about as much credibility as measuring cranium shapes to determine criminality!

Make Winston Great Again.

Great what?

The guy is entertaining, charismatic, I wish he'd have chosen a career in the entertainment industry instead of falling into politics through very debatable means when he stood as a candidate 4 or more decades ago.

This latest BS with him, an old opinionated man, demanding a referendum on the bill to remove abortion from the Crimes Act is appalling. The bill has cross-party support, having abortion treated as a "crime" makes NZ a laughing stock, referendums are crazy, divisive, opportunities for spread of wild disinformation and zealotry - particularly by a very vocal lunatic fringe of religious extremists.

Another IT scam bites the dust.

I am just reading an RNZ item about a much-hyped 'futuristic' IT project that was supposed to 'revolutionise' our transport system. At least, that is what Simon Bridges enthused when he was transport minister. I wasn't aware of this, but from the RNZ article, it sounds a lot like another credulous sucker dazzled by another technobabble fast-talking con artist. Shades of Novapay!

I am not hammering Bridges for this. I don't know any details beyond what I just read in the RNZ article and in any case anyone can make a mistake. But some here are very quick to jump on any and all mistakes (real or imagined) that are made by current government ministers, and I feel it is only fair to point out that they are not the only ones who cost taxpayers money by serving up pie in the sky.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the Stats NZ debacle and the fact that yet again when confronted with an opportunity to own the issue, apologise and say they will do better next time, our esteemed stats minister instead decided to point out he wasn't the only minister involved that there were 6 others too (As if this makes it better somehow).

At least the Chief statistician did the right thing and stood down. (In contrast to the treasury head, or any of the Coalition ministers who made multiple unfounded claims against the opposition during the budget "leaks", and didn't even apologise or seemingly receive any consequences).

Apparently, accountability and transparency means something different to these people.

Turns out almost all of the criticism of Kiwibuild over multiple campaigns was valid, despite the insistence that it was sound by multiple Labour Party leaders - including the current PM.

If a private company had promised this in a prospectus with so many question marks hanging over it, the SFO would be involved.

Not sure why Twyford is still a Minister....appalling really.
