The new announcement that history will now be a mandatory topic in schools is one causing me internal conflict. I HATED history at school, it bored me beyond belief and even now I find most fairly boring (though the older I get....).  I was kinda amused by the fact that it was the top headline this morning and the one under it was schools in Auckland saying they were facing a teacher shortage crisis. I haven't looked at the new announcement, but I wonder where the teachers for this are coming from, or if they just expect it to be crammed in with another topic.

I am torn because despite the fact I myself have no real interest in history, I do feel some knowledge of NZ history is somewhat important, though in my opinion what NEEDS to be taught could be taught in a matter of hours. For knowledge beyond that, then take history as an elective topic.

From my distant memory of high school I recall history was a core subject for 2 terms a year, as was a language. I liked the idea of an extra language but my school only taught German, which I didn't like at all, I wanted to learn French.

Oh dear, you hated history so ban it? Teacher shortage did that just start after the election?

IMHO, an overall education is important. History matters, geography matters. From a few 15yo's I have contact with they knowi sweet FA about anything, which actually shocks me. Its going the US way. Did you not have a choice at school re language> I did German for 3 years, if that was now its Mandarin that will actually be useful. I used my German skills twice for tourists, thats it

I enjoy history. But I didn't enjoy the way it was taught. So I just went off and studied it myself.

Agree. These days, may as well get a Doctorate in gaming and iOS and be dumb with it....literally

I also hated history at school but that was probably down to the teachers and the subject material. I read a bit of historical fiction now and enjoy linking that to real events.

I just have a feeling that this NZ history may be as much about entrenching grievance and guilt as anything else

Oh dear is right!

Not once did I say ban it, and not once did I suggest the teacher shortage was in any way related to the current Government. Quit trying to conjure an argument out of thin air.

But answer me this, with a teacher shortage, where are the resources for teaching another subject in school coming from? This Government has a history of announcing policy without thinking about how they will actually resource and execute it.

I see Judith Collins and other National MPs are also involved in this. Just saying.

Agree completely. I remember when tobacco companies sponsored sports events. This feels very similar.

Going back a bit but your implication is clear. Im not sure where the teacher shortage resources are coming from. From 2017 or 2010? It didn't just start after the last election like most issues this poor country we live in has. Note that of all the things this Govt has done, not all are failures. The problem for NZ is if that continues or we go back to the past which is under funding everything. So its a loss from all as far as I'm concerned. I have lost faith with this Govt and the last one is no better. One cannot do it, the other wont do it.

Fortunately, once this Govt is deposed we have Judith, Simon and Paula. OMG, it is one step removed from Trump.

Let's not throw stones whilst we live in glass houses shall we? You can draw plenty of parallels if you simply look hard enough.... 100K houses,  "most honest and transparent Government NZ has ever had", and all that...

There was no implication. There was what I stated, that it was amusing to see a Government announce a policy that requires more teachers (and depending on who you listen to, considerably more) when the next headline right underneath it at the same time was talk of teacher shortages.

That's all. You can stop looking for something to start a fight about now.

I am interested to hear, however, what you consider the big wins this Government had that no other Government would have? The policies that they came up with and executed that have provable results?

I think it is fair to turn this around and ask if a National government, made up of the current suspects, would have done any better. Would we be happier, richer, better housed, otherwise better off if the election had gone the other way? I don't know and it is impossible to say for sure, but I have my doubts.

Deflection. Why don't you answer the question? What are this Governments big Coalition specific wins from policies they came up with and delivered?

I believe as far as National was concerned, that pretty much everything actually DELIVERED by this Government could have and would have been delivered at least as well, by National. We lost some clever experienced minds, and some good leadership and some momentum in the change of Government. If you strip out the fairy tales (100K homes and other policies that were never going to be delivered), the two parties policies and promises were pretty much identical. Spending on social issues would have been similar. I didn't support, want or think tax cuts were a good idea (and would prefer going forward those were not offered and spending on social issues increased instead), but business confidence in general would have been better. The issue is, assuming that this coalition don't get a second term, is that very little will happen, whilst yet another Government beds in, works out what's what and takes the reigns, under, in my opinion, weaker leadership and potentially less strong financial nous, than we would have had under English and Joyce and the rest.

I truthfully thought reasonably highly of Robertson, I thought he was the best of Labours ministers, but I no longer feel that way, and feel he is woefully short on what I think would be required for Financial leadership during a serious global financial correction.

I maintain that a teal partnership at the next election would be good for the country. I imagine it would be a hard sell for most of the hard left Greens supporters, and Shaw definitely isn't a good enough leader to change minds.
