Moving the Port away makes sense as does a lot of decentralisation. I would like to see the same in Wellington. Instead of adding more capacity to the transport for the CBDs it is better sense to reduce the demand by moving services away from the CBDs. Its a win for the city and a win for the regions.

It's not a win for the Auckland region as it introduces a whole raft of supply chain risk that it currently doesn't face. Not having the port in the CBD is quite different to not having any port in the same district.

Best thing they ever did for Sydney was shift the Port from Pyrmont/Darling Harbour to Botany.  But there's quite a difference - Botany is a hell of a lot closer to the industrial / commercial areas of Sydney than Whangarei is to South Auckland. I think it took them the best part of a decade to shift the port.

I tend to agree.  When I was shipping reasonably large volume of containerised and some bulk product mainly through Lyttelton, some shipping lines would bypass Lyttelton and call at Timaru.  There was no cost penalty, the shipping lines did deals so cost for the Timaru-Chch leg was essentially free - but certainly not if for example you wanted the container dropped 150km South of Timaru - that would cost an extra $x000 including MT return to depot.  If there's no port in Akl, freight cost to and from port to Auckland will go up.

Rising sea levels makes moving the ports essential.

Does it? LHB has been in the process of extending the port here for the past decade, adding an extra metre of fill to allow for sea level rise would be relatively trivial.

Then there's a bonus - if the sea level rises a metre, that's a metre less dredging they need to do.

If they shift the port in Wellington, where else can it go?

I consulted Stuff comments to get some genuine feel for this power move. I could have consulted our resident power expert here who has been posting to get rid of low user charges for years as they penalise poor people. Stuff wins. The 7 comments show it all.

Yup, and the relative prices for that area would reflect that level of uncertainty, as would lead times and resupply windows for local operators. Moving the Port a day's train away from the biggest city could arguably lead to more freight going South by road than there is currently going North.

I get that 'freeing up the waterfront' appeals to a certain white collar crowd who can't stand the thought of visible industry, but that's sort of what makes cities possible.

Seeing as it's quiet here, does anyone want to share any daily reading they do for local political issues? The Herald being paywalled has made me far more too productive at work for my own liking.

Thinking the same! It can get childishly bitchy here :-) , but not from all

GV your AKL transport stuff, unsure where that will go fo you, I know its frustrating.

Whats happened this week? The power reform is important, our resident expert Andrew has been banging on about this for years, which is removing Low User charges, which reward well off people with modern energy efficient homes and penalise poor people in homes that cost a mint to heat. Removing payment penalties.

Not a big deal, but fixing one broken system.

It will probably cost me more as Im on low user, new house, Solar HW, but it will be fairer. I see grey power is bagging it. I assume they will pay more as well, as general better off, smaller homes, low user plan. Same old thing, I know its fairer but if it costs me $ I disagree... Sad

The Government will remove a "racist refugee policy" that discriminates against people from Africa and the Middle East, and increase the quota for those areas.

Im not sure why that policy existed. But I disagree with Coalition labelling it "racist", thats just petty point scoring.  Did National create a racist law? Clearly not. If they were excessively cautious over Africa and the Middle East thats not racist. Most if not all refugees are coloured, so I assume the past rule was based around terrorism concerns?

In any case, a good fix, the world continues to change, this keeps up with that

How many poorer people that do pay their power bills on time, are going to be adversly affected by this? Must be an enormous number of people that use below 8kw/annum and do not get working for families etc that will have to face an increase in costs. 8kw/annum is quite a large amount of electricity. This is a poorly thought out policy change that will affect the poorer of our community eg people living alone or even older couples. The whole idea of this review was to look at the total cost of our energy including the ballooning costs of transmission.
