Yes, the contest is on, so yes, the 12B is in play. Roads wise, if Nats say here are RONS, you cant then say, "no, Nats said this so we wont do those as all are wrong". If both parties put together their own RONS then they will be very similar. National can provide their alternative for the 12B spend, whuch they will no doubt do at some point. It better not be tax cuts.

We both know the Nats package will be the just the roads bit but with the costs blown out to eat up the full $12b 😄

I had high hopes that Bishop would see the light on things like SH16 - there's no more room to add any roads, so LRT/Rapid Transit Busway is really the only option for alternatives to driving - but I doubt it's going to happen.

Looks like most of the roading is in AKL. No doubt that will be the wrong roads :-), but I assume it will be a good thing up there. Here in ChCh we get almost zero, but thats ok, our Southern Motorway and Northern builds are well underway

Isnt the proposed LR already in planning so will go ahead anyway?

No. It is stalling while Cabinet makes a decision about the delivery partner. It hasn't even publicly stated whether what the LRT system will be trying to achieve i.e. speed to the airport or connecting PT-deprived parts of the city. The two options apparently have different routes, different specs and massively different costs. Everything is on hold until the Cabinet decision.

I find something off-putting about allowing infrastructure projects to be delayed until you announce them the day after the PM has announced the election date.

Especially given how you have been lambasted for not delivering them and after causing a giant fuss when an Opposition MP questioned how you were going to pay for your policies.

Frankly I have found Robertson's crowing about prudent financial management hard to stomach in light of this. I too could be a prudent financial manager if I never spent any money or paid my mortgage. But then I would have nowhere to live.

What lol??  The first bold is you are referring to the wrong Govt , the second already exists....

The 12B spend was already announced, thats no surprise. The detail wasnt till today, it should have been Monday? I wasnt aware that this 12B spend and its specific projects was already announced in the 2017 campaign. So that means they have already budgeted for them and are adding them again?

Announce elections followed by announce 12b dollars spending on infrastructure. I'm not badmouthing anyone, just stating the obvious.

Don't forget:

Signaled $12b spend months ago, gave no details.

Told us to wait.

Waited until day after election announced.

Announces a bunch of stuff they actively campaigned against to get elected.

I don't think there is much in this just timing as Parliament is only just starting up post shut down. If it were an election ploy they would gain for more leverage by releasing this news around June. If governments didn't launch new programmes in the election year to save election bribe accusations we would only have  two year government

Sorta - parties are often governed by internal polling as much as anything else. I think Labour knows all they have is brand-Jacinda and if the label of a do-nothing government sticks (and National get traction with it) they'll pull all sorts of levers as quickly as they can. They have form with this too - think 'Town Hall Reset' / 'Year of Delivery'.

Back to front it was actually Already announce 12b infrastructure then announce election date (which everyone knew was imminent and likely to be Sept Seems all conspiracy to me, what is there to gain I'm more interested in policy details between now and election day, from both parties, than petty side issues.

Then we have two do little parties do we not? Thats where this election will differ. Whats the norm? get voted in, hang around until "its time for a change" get voted out, rinse and repeat. Nats had no policies, got in on that time for a change, had little policy in between as Labs in tatters. Now Labs in power and faltered. The masses , after underfunding from one and after lack of implementation from the other, want real things to happen, they wont want marketing rhetoric. They can choose between past history of National , will they actually start doing stuff and actually have policies, and will Labour have learnt the lesson of policy and delivery?  Its possibly a yes to both sides, National will finally get its hands dirty and the wallet out, Labour probably has learnt from being burnt. I don't think it will be the usual campaign slogans and jingles this time round

Your dancing cossacks have a show in Sept.

I see there is some electrification on that 12B (well 8B, they are putting 4 aside)

Hooooooly.

Alright, so Bridges has to go one way or the other. He's too close to this.

Time to start a straw poll on new leaders.

Although this is interesting:

In a statement, the National Party said neither leader Simon Bridges or the party itself have been charged following the SFO probe.

"I have always maintained. As I have always said the allegations against both myself and the Party were baseless and false," Bridges says.

So...JLR? The donees? Ross is not returning calls according to the article. I missed this when I first posted it, but unless the only National Party associate concerned is Ross then Bridges has questions to answer.

The national party is claiming that no one in the party has been charged and is therefore claiming vindication.

Something here doesn't stack up.
