Age is irrelevant, Emmanuel Macron is 39, Justin Trudeau was circa 40 when elected

1 August was really the last day the Labour Party could make a change & give the new leader any real go at the election campaign. I think Jacinda will handle the media much much better than Andrew Little.

The real elephant in the room might turn out to be support for NZ First. I sense that people are grumpy about Auckland housing issues & immigration and they are linking those issues together. Could there be a lot of 'Shy Winston' supporters out there similar to the shy tories in Britain?

I had expected Little to have least have been in until after the election, but I guess at this stage it is the easiest way for Ardern to step in given Labours own rules around election of a leader. Hospital pass for her for sure, she has close to zero chance to turn things around enough to form a Govt this time around, but in 3 years, if she survives, who knows.

How much weight do voters put on a figurehead leader?

I haven't / wouldnt bother tracking the polls, but you would only have to look at National which had the most popular (in the polls at least) leader possibly in its entire history stepping down and handing it off to one who doesn't carry anywhere near the popularity. Has Nationals share of the vote nosedived in proportion to the drop off in leadership popularity? Gut feel says no. A hit, for sure, but not a nosedive.

She is safe in her Mt Albert seat and doesn't risk losing a fight to National in central Auckland, that would look bad for a leader of the opposition to lose an electoral seat.

Roll on Sept 23rd.

Any candidate seeking to lead as Prime Minister of New Zealand should ideally do so by drawing on their personal skill and expertise obtained from previous work in Finance, Commerce, Business, Trade, or other relevant Profession where they can point to significant accomplishments that delivered meaningful improvement for their stakeholders.

And drawing on all that skill as a currency speculator/hick farmer/minor bureaucrat they come up with such visionary ideas as more crapping cows per hectare to ensure our status as a peasant primary producer economy serving a much more advanced world that has moved on and more white elephant industrial scale dams to water the cows and degrade what is left of the environment.

I personally don't think she is ready yet however a fresh face and more personable person was much needed, I would have put Grant Robertson as deputy though.

Last time (2002) wasn't what you'd call a triumphant success.

Could be a case of the blind battling the visually impaired?

Although if Winston gets into the major debates, not relegated to the minor parties like last time, I suspect he will mop the floor with both of them, there won't be much substance to his arguments, there hardly ever is, but it will be full of bluster and nonetheless entertaining.

Yes age is just a number etc etc. However it comes down to maturity, as well as life experiences. Lets just say that I don't think she will be any match in the leaders debate against the like of English, Winston Peters etc. SHe hasn't been in politics all that long, an didn't she she did say she had no aspirations to be leader quite recently? I am guessing she may also want to have kids in the near future, which won't be all that easy if you are the PM. Not all people want to have kids, but most seem to.

Little was always the wrong choice, because he was like an unflavoured instant pudding and just didn't come across as likable. He had no humour to him, at least that is the way he came across on TV. IMO Robertson would have been the smart choice for leader.

He should have been leader, infact from the start before Little. He would still be a young fresh young leader, and he seems to know his stuff.

Not sure what having children has to do with it. If she does become PM she like any leader does not need to think up all the policies etc they have a Cabinet, Caucus and several hundred/thousand Civil Servants for that.

I would say a huge importance. National essentially got in in 2008 because of Key. Winston is essentially NZ first etc.

He is male though... obviously very different for a female.

Likewise English was actually leader of national for a short time when he was young, around 40, but he was far too young and IMO didn't come across well at the time due to his inexperience.
