I agree that this is a non-event but funnily enough I wouldn't put it past Winston to leak this himself to portray himself as the victim and rake in more votes/airtime.

Its typical Winston for election time...he is blaming National, he has begun legal action...yet he wont waiver his privacy on this "innocent" issue.

Interesting comments coming from Senior Members of the National Party about who knew what, and who was told.

Who do you believe after the Barclay affair where the PM denied many of the allegations being made and how his story changed around the texts?

Give me a reason why should I believe him now over The Peters affair????

This is an interesting point. Jacinda Ardern gets hammered as lipstick on the same old policies, or too inexperienced to be PM, but I suspect a big factor in her meteoric rise is that she comes across as utterly sincere and non-duplicitous. While others grope for weasel words, she says what she thinks, concedes points she can't win, and creates a very good impression of what you see is what you get. I don't know if this is true. I don't know if she is hiding skeletons. But she does an outstanding job of appearing to be completely open and honest and candid, and there aren't many other prominent politicians who can do this. That is why she appeals to me and I'm sure it is also why she may well become the country's next PM.

Winston Peters has long campaigned regarding superannuation and I find it odd that he would know the rate of payment he was receiving and how it compared to the well documented rates of payment. I also know the procedures and policy followed by MSD, the statement that would be taken when living arrangements are declared. Given who it was the case would have been dealt with by a senior staff member and the computer record has additional security and access privileges assigned. The rate would have been determined the appropriate payment code entered along with the living arrangement details. A letter would have been generated and sent which would have detailed the new status of the pension and the rate of payment showing the yearly entitlement and fortnightly instalments, the letter also details the review rights, and the responsibilities of the recipient.

Over the years of alleged incorrect payment annual tax details would have been provided.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It's more likely that National leaked it than Winston. It's not exactly the first time this sort of thing has happened involving the National government.

Winston earns about $180k/annum just from parliament...he is a very wealthy man, so his super payments are just loose change. Surprised his accountant didnt find it.

If a pensioner is claiming an under age spouse to be included in their pension making their pension means tested or they are receiving means tested supplementary support like Disability Allowance they must complete yearly declaration. If both are over 65 and only receiving National Superannuation they are not required to complete annual statements etc. Of course they do tax returns. If they are single then enter a marriage type relationship or get married they must inform MSD so their pensions can be adjusted. They must also advise MSD if they are leaving NZ for greater than 26 weeks.
