Only $299 million in advertising revenue last year.

 

It'd be interesting to know how much of that advertising revenue is paid for by the government one way or another, public service messages etc, to come up with a net commercial advertising revenue figure.

 

Presumably a "not for profit" and commercial ad-free service could still deliver those public service messages - free.

 

I don't watch TVNZ except for very rare occasions (news sometimes).  The ads are at a ridiculous level.

Sure - the govt would be paying for all the airtime to begin with. Rather than a govt agency spending money on buying commercial airtime, the govt would be paying for the entire broadcast beginning to end. 

 

If your angle is that the govt would save money on paying for slots in commercial breaks, I doubt the savings would be all that much.
