It's their business. Boredom doesn't factor into it.

They're almost certainly still actively polling - the difference is that the polls that they have been commissioned to undertake have not been publicly released. Both major parties conduct extensive internal polling. I find it intriguing that they are keeping the results to themselves.

The government had been providing plenty of news fodder without having to resort to polls to generate headlines.

They don't generally run them very regularly outside of election year. I don't put a lot of stock in polls except when there is a general election coming up, a large portion of the general public don't pay much attention to politics except around elections, so their opinions on a telephone poll are not necessarily indicative of the real results you would actually get if people gave it serious thought.

"I don't believe I've ever used that phrase and I expect them to refer to us as a coalition Government that's the truth of our arrangement," Ms Ardern said.

And here is the deviousness of a politician's answer: When JA says "that phrase" does she refer to "labour-led" or to telling her ministers not to say "labour-led".

If we aren't sure what she's saying, we can't say it's untrue.

That's pretty much the norm. The exception is when they (or someone with access to the data) sees political advantage in releasing something.

I agree that it's the norm to conduct internal polling.

But it is definitely NOT normal to not have any public polls for over 4 months... (the graph that I showed proves that for at least the past 3 years, there has been at least one public poll conducted each month, and I'm reasonably sure that that pattern continues much further back than just 3 yrs)

I'm wondering if this is a Nat v Lab thing, or something specific to this coalition. I might go and have a look...

Maybe their polling revealed that folks are tired of the polls. It could be with demise of the land line it is getting harder to do the polling.

Business confidence polls don't seem to be so great at predicting outcomes.

GDP growth in the June quarter was 1%, double the RBNZ forecast.

The err... "Coalition" really must be congratulated for that result.

GDP is such a crude measure of an economy. Mycoplasma bovis culling of cattle boosted the figure according the report on RNZ today.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has fired embattled MP Meka Whaitiri as a minister over an incident with a staff-member.

Whaitiri was stood down on August 30 after it was alleged she shouted at and manhandled a member of her staff three days earlier, and an investigation launched.

Ardern has received a report from the investigation and said while Whaitiri was still disputing aspects of the event, there was no doubt that an incident had taken place.

When it rains, it pours.

Has not been a good couple of months for the Coalition. Their shallow depth of experience is hurting them.

The business confidence stats were over-represented in the media IMO. While they weren't positive, they are not actually a measure of tangible activity, I feel probably a lot of the general public have limited understanding of how such a statistic actually relates to economic performance.

In saying that, the gdp is good - let's hope it stays up. If this government can deliver strong economic performance and make beneficial social improvements at the smae time then I have no objection.

The reason I don't like this coalition is because I felt, given its policies that delivering success on either of those two fronts was highly unlikely, and is by no means guaranteed in the long-term yet.

It does make me wonder where the threshold of behaviour lies for being deemed no longer suitable to be a Labour MP. Evidently, with this and Mallard's prior assault on Tau Henare, it is much lower than I had first imagined it might be.

I think it was just a matter of when for MP Meka Whaitiri as process's had to be gone through.

This is what makes me wonder though " ministerial staffers sign event-based contracts which mean ministers can fire them very easily if the relationship breaks down, with no real recourse for the employee other than a payout. "

I just assumed the coalition was trying to stop this sort of thing just like the 90 day rule.
