I recently came across the term emotional haemophiliac.

Perfectly describes someone who has their feelings hurt easily and lacks the ability to self heal.

Get a life.  That's just plain stupid.

I didn't coin the phrase.  Just reporting what I read.

Did that include what's presumably your opinion (italicised)?

Reads more like an endorsement than a "report".

@MikeAqua @Fred99 why is it always you two?  If you can't play nice, play elsewhere.

Because he is so often wrong (joke)

My comments irk him, his subjective reading of them irks me.  No harm done to either of us as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure always is the right word.  Often could be ...

Italics are for emphasis.  I didn't express an opinion and the words aren't mine.  TBH I can't even remember where read them (yesterday).  I'm a sucker for a zingy metaphor.

I'm pedantic.  No excuses.

Actually Mikeaqua and I possibly agree on many more things than we disagree on.

Fred99: Almost invariably, terms like "SJW" and "snowflake" apply equally to the accusers as the targets. Idiots arguing for social Darwinism seem to be the most vocal "SJW's" - and the most easily triggered.

Yep, reminds me of Trump supporters who are like this - but then get all hurt when they are on the other side of the stick:

@kingdragonfly could you explain the relevance of this audio to this discussion? Just posting here without interpretation is not useful.

Social Darwinism was mentioned several times. It's a good audio for those who want a somewhat neutral backgrounder.

The audio also talks about a fallacy of social Darwinism:

1) the success of evolution is measured by passing genes to the next generation, breeding success

2) the lower classes out breed the upper classes

Conclusion: the lower classes are more successful than upper classes, contrary to Social Darwinism.

This morning I've learnt:

"Jazz hands" might be offensive (to people with black faces?).
"Emotional haemophiliac" is offensive (to haemophiliacs?).
If you say "SJW" or "snowflake" you're probably a SJW or a snowflake.
"Jazz hands" might be insulting to hearing impaired students.
Suggesting a hearing-impaired person doesn't like clapping is calling them a retard.

Better get back to work now...

There's a couple of issues about using the terms SJW and snowflake.

When you resort to lazy terms like this it usually indicates that you don't wish to engage and actually discuss the 'issue', if any, at hand. You want to engage in name calling.

Use of the term is intended to set the terms of the debate. It is intended to manipulate attention away from the issue onto a distraction - after all, no one liked being called a 'crybaby' at primary school and no one likes being called 'cuck' or other insult de jour online, do they.

Bear in mind that on the internet (GZ included) there's usually a woefully low standard of discourse involved in any issue that involves political subject matter.

I would argue that if MF intends to maintain decency using tools such as a ban for using the term 'nazi' he should implement a ban on terms like these also.

Not because they are objectionable but because they have become utterly lazy empty phrases that add nothing to a discussion.

Agree and disagree with the above. Agree that insult terms like snowflake are used as substitutes for thought and are therefore not only lazy, but also unintelligent and demeaning. Also agree that on the Internet there is usually a woefully low standard of discourse involved in any issue that involves political subject matter. What I disagree with is equating them with Godwin’s. Those terms and others, like the other infamous ‘N’ word, are laden with highly emotive associations that cause real pain and do not need to be used in polite company, or any company at all.

Words that are merely pejorative, and that most people ought to be able to rise above, should not be banned. Otherwise you have to start banning everything. I believe in basic decency but I do not believe in censorship. Unlike most of the Internet, Geekzone users are grown-up enough to know where the boundaries should lie, and those who are not do not last here long.

Disclaimer: Early in my time on Geekzone I thoughtlessly dropped the Godwin N-bomb and was duly banned. It was a sobering experience for me and forced me to really think about the easy use of such terms. I made a sincere and heartfelt apology and was allowed back after some time in the wilderness. I think it is a correct policy, with an exception being made only for the Trump thread (with good reason). The exception has not been abused. I think the mods do an outstanding job here of getting the balance just right, especially after a recent brief visit to Kiwiblog. I am very grateful at least one place like Geekzone exists.

Nope. There's a good reason for not allowing Goodwin Law and there's a good reason for not banning terms like this.

Also it would be only good for one side.
