The Treasury says it believes leaked budget information was the result of a hacker.

Following this morning's media reports of a potential leak of Budget information, the Treasury has gathered sufficient evidence to indicate that its systems have been deliberately and systematically hacked, Treasury secretary and chief executive Gabriel Makhlouf said.

He said the Treasury has referred the matter to the Police on the advice of the National Cyber Security Centre.

The Treasury takes the security of all the information it holds extremely seriously.

This is either extremely serious or massively stupid. I'm not sure the Budget is even the most interesting thing that Treasury has on file. It's still a government department, so I'm not sure whether that has broader implications.

Occam's Razor would suggest that at Treasury sick of being labelled 'kids' or other things by current government ministers got tired being publicly dumped on.

Or alternatively, like a lot of other government information, it could have just been flash drive or a folder left on a bus, which is also a relatively frequent occurrence.

But then again, didn't Dirty Politics tell us that some people on the left were OK with hacking provided they weren't on the receiving end of any fallout?

It's also a long bow to draw to imply that National commissioned the hacking of Treasury.

The fact that Treasury think they were hacked and that National are the ones releasing this information doesn't mean they know about it or asked someone to do it.

I see Bridges is doubling down on Twitter:

This can't have been a bait and switch, can it? I know Simon's probably a lot smarter than people think, but he hasn't shown anywhere near that level of political cunning up until now.

"The Treasury has referred the matter to the police on the advice of the National Cyber Security Centre."

NZHerald digs further:

Earlier today the Herald found the Treasury website had holding pages on its website with headings for the same 19 vote overviews that National has released details off. They were dated May 30 and locked so access was blocked. All 19 have now been taken off the website. About 21 other overview pages - including education and welfare - had not been put up at all and no details from those have been released. However other Budget 2019 pages were up - including the overall estimates.

Nice work from the Herald. The implication is the information was obtained from the Treasury website or a source document for the website.

So, the issue here is that National is being smeared? So, lets ignore that they came into possession, and are smearing the Govt, as the latter is all that matters? If I didnt secure my house as well as I could have, or there was a way in I wasnt aware of, and I got burgled, I guess I go to jail and the burgler gets a medal???

Or maybe the burgler was just shrewd?

Its apolitics thread, partisan and all that, but wow.

Again, you are assuming National commissioned a hack of the website. If someone else has done it and then leaked it to them under the guise of being a disgruntled treasury staffer, then that's much different to National 'burgling' someone.

Again, you are assuming National commissioned a hack of the website. If someone else has done it and then leaked it to them under the guise of being a disgruntled treasury staffer, then that's much different to National 'burgling' someone.

Like receiving stolen goods and keeping them? National has bought into this 100% by accepting illicit documents, advising publically that he wont divulge the source and dribbling them out over the course of a day for maximum effect . Coincidentally the same day they release their shocking discrimination report behind this white noise. It looks pretty pathetic and devious to me

No, its more like your house got burgled, your neighbour boasted they had the stuff. At which point you would want the burglar AND your neighbour investigated.

At all times, National could have said no to receiving stolen goods, the opportunity to try and score political points was too great a temptation, and they DO deserve fallout too.

Its a coverup. For you to imply that National did anything wrong rather than doing their job well is not right either. It is the job of the opposition to take what they can get and to make a score of this magnitude is a top score, obviously as long as they did nothing illegal in the process. I would imagine that the material landed anonymously in Nationals hands, and that they probably also secured some legal advise. And..Treasury was hacked 2000 times over 48 hours and they didnt take their systems offline or investigate until now?

If you feel the manner that National has acted is doing their job well, welcome to America. Nothing more to say after that, the bar in this country must be a lot lower than I imagined, but I will stick with the bar that I am more comfortable with

I guess it's like that time that journalist got hold of all those emails, wrote books about them and then everyone was quite happy to repeat whatever he thought strung them together as a political narrative. Unfortunately the left has made this bed, now they're sleeping in it.

Off course he will say that. In fact no one can directly accuse National. My assumption is that they either masterminded this or happily accepted and abused this. My belief is the latter. Most of the blame I read is by National. If EVERY party that has access to the documents are all employed by and are Labour people, then yes, its their problem and cause, but that's not the case. So, its a bummer, it got leaked. Im surprised that you feel that Treasury security and security of the other parties is all Labour's fault. In conclusion, National is 100% innocent and are doing a great job, as I said, welcome to America. Id like to think politics here is many steps above American politics, clearly others see otherwise and enjoy that

2000 hacking attempts on treasury’s website over 48 hours, hacking attempts seeming to target budget details.

Unable to confirm if National obtained their info from the hack. Treasury only discovered they had been hacked after National leaks, as they went and checked afterwards.

My comment: If National had not started realeasing some of the budget, Treasury may still not have realised they had been hacked.
