I'd expect some follow-up to that tweet, he'll probably be desperately trying to arrange a meeting with Xi to announce talks or whatever, claiming victory.

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that the Chinese government called his team in Washington on Sunday in a bid to restart talks on trade, Bloomberg News reported. The two countries both raised tariffs last week as their trade war escalated.

Told ya so.

Futures immediately jumped 1% into positive territory. 1% may not sound much, but if you could do it 100 times a year, doubling your money sure as hell beats 2 or 3% interest on cash, gold, bitcoin, whatever.

Imagine that. If you were in on it, beats lotto.

He did this with a pump and dump scheme in the '80s. It took a couple of years for the market to wake up.

It's possible that he makes this sh!t up to work the markets solely for political gain, but I doubt it. I think he's sitting on a golden "throne" - laughing at the world he's sh!tting on.

With Trade Talks Looming, U.S. and China Move to Relax Tensions

WASHINGTON — The trade war between the United States and China showed signs of easing on Thursday, as China reportedly made its first large purchase in months of American soybeans after President Trump agreed to briefly delay his next round of tariffs.

A trade deal between the two sides is not imminent, and deep divisions remain. But after weeks of escalating tariffs that have pushed the bilateral relationship to its rockiest point in decades, both countries appeared eager this week to try to calm tensions before a new round of talks next month.

Mr. Trump said on Thursday that China would resume purchases of American farm goods, and Beijing confirmed that Chinese companies were making inquiries about buying products including pork and soybeans.

The president’s announcement, made on Twitter on Thursday morning, followed a day of cooling tensions, in which China announced that it would grant some limited exemptions to its tariffs for American products, and Mr. Trump responded by promising to delay his next tariff increase by two weeks to Oct. 15.

China’s Ministry of Commerce said some Chinese companies were beginning to make inquiries about resuming purchases of American agricultural products. “Soybeans and pork are all within the scope of inquiry,” said Gao Feng, a spokesman for the ministry. “I hope that China and the United States will move in the same direction and create favorable conditions for consultations.”

It's not like we are going to create a lot of jobs by putting tariffs on wine and olive oil. Instead, we just have indecision on the part of the larger enterprises by managers paralyzed by where the next tariff's going to hit.

US officials have been banned from supporting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, after Donald Trump reportedly promised the US would stay quiet during trade negotiations.

Trump gave the undertaking to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in a phone call in June, according to CNN.

The report represents the latest revelation about Trump’s personal phone calls with foreign leaders, records of which were moved to a highly classified system, and have only started to emerge with the start of impeachment hearings in Congress.

As a result of the gag order, the US general counsel in Hong Kong, Kurt Tong, was told to cancel an appearance at a US thinktank and a planned speech on the protests that have shaken the territory for weeks.

Trump's 'China Muse' Has an Imaginary Friend

Who is Ron Vara? He only seems to exist in the books of Peter Navarro.

Chronicle Review By Tom Bartlett

Ron Vara has strong opinions. He thinks you’ve “got to be nuts to eat Chinese food.” He doles out little scraps of wisdom, like “Don’t play checkers in a chess world.” Vara is a military veteran and Harvard-trained economist who made seven figures in the stock market by investing in companies that do well during international crises. His contrarian savvy earned him an ominous-sounding nickname: Dark Prince of Disaster.

Vara makes frequent cameos in the books of Peter Navarro, a White House adviser who is often referred to as Trump’s “China muse.” Before joining the White House, Navarro was a professor of economics and public policy at the University of California at Irvine and the author of books like Death by China: Confronting the Dragon — A Global Call to Action and The Coming China Wars: Where They Will Be Fought and How They Can Be Won (FT Press). He’s since become one of Trump’s most dogged defenders, telling CNN recently that “I am never disappointed in my president.”

Trump seems to have faith in Navarro, too. The Wall Street Journal reported in August that when the president decided to impose tariffs on China, the only adviser in favor of the plan was Navarro.

China scholars and fellow economists tend to be less enthused. Navarro doesn’t have a background in Chinese studies, doesn’t speak the language, and reportedly made his first trip to the country only last year.

...In her research, she kept running across a name she didn't recognize: Ron Vara. Navarro has quoted Vara a dozen or so times in six books, usually as an epigraph before a chapter. In Death by China, published in 2011, Vara offers this sweeping assessment of the country’s roughly 1.4 billion people: “Only the Chinese can turn a leather sofa into an acid bath, a baby crib into a lethal weapon, and a cellphone battery into heart-piercing shrapnel.”

So who is Ron Vara? He didn’t seem to exist except in the work of Peter Navarro.

...Morris-Suzuki, now in full detective mode... No one could turn up any record of Vara.

While Ron Vara appears not to have attended Harvard in the 1980s, Navarro did.

...And there was another tip-off: “Ron Vara” is an anagram of “Navarro.”

...What does Peter Navarro have to say about his imaginary friend? I emailed the White House press office and received a phone call from Navarro. While he declined to speak on the record, he did send a statement in which he called Ron Vara a “whimsical device and pen name I’ve used throughout the years for opinions and purely entertainment value, not as a source of fact.”

...The inside joke doesn't strike Morris-Suzuki as particularly funny. Maybe, she said, Vara began as a whimsical device — though even that’s questionable in books that purport to be nonfiction. But “once he started to be used as a source of fear and loathing about China, and of messages which readers are likely to believe about the dangers of various Chinese products, the joke wore very thin,” she said. She was left “wondering whether there might be other invented sources in Navarro's work.”
