freitasm:

For example: "National's Simon Bridges says police commissioner Andrew Coster is too 'woke' for the job"

He's been chastised by his leader.

News article:

Collins on Bridges' wokester jibe: 'I wouldn't call someone that'

Oh -  but an earlier news article:

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern should 'stop being so woke' - Judith Collins

Fred99:

The existence of an "organised" "far left" faction is myth.  Trumpists seem to think electing (definitely not far-left) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Bernie Sanders threatens a pending communist revolution.

A depressing thought exercise for today; try to figure out where Bill English's unrealised social investment programme would have landed him on the American political spectrum. He'd have been decried as a radical socialist, or suggested as being under instruction from a foreign power to erode the real America.

The most "commie" PM we've had in my lifetime was probably Robert Muldoon.  Pro "big state", high taxes, and anti "free market".  Elected as PM partly thanks to ingenious marketing using "dancing Cossacks" as a symbol of what the threat of "socialism - ahem communism" would bring (err - the Cossacks were actually on the other side - fighting the Bolsheviks, but never mind) and partly due to selling the idea that Labour's proposed compulsory private super scheme was "communist" but the universal state super scheme wasn't. Very effective at using "personality politics" to slay his opponents. When the economy was on the verge of falling apart (most of his time), create some major distraction by proposing support (de facto - by abdicating real leadership) for a springbok tour or offering to send an obsolete warship to help mother England fight a war that had nothing to do with us, where at best we'd have probably been a bloody nuisance.

On a more positive note, if Muldoonism had prevailed, house prices might only be in low earth orbit, not way past escape velocity.

The irony being that half the people complaining Ardern doesn't follow through on her promises and doesn't do enough aren't old enough to remember when we had a PM who did exactly what they said they would and it was terrible.

Having said that, if Think Big had worked out, we'd be lauding Muldoon as as genius.
