Even thoughtless and stupid seems a bit too far in my view. Possibly thoughtless at a push. Everyone in NZ is raw and hurting, clearly people aren't thinking 100% clearly. It was missed, it's been fixed. No conspiracy and really, in the grand scheme of things unlikely to be world changing either.

People need to stop jumping all over things right now and blowing things out of proportion. It's not going to help the victims or in fact anyone really. Instead it's going to fuel anger and fear and other negative things.

Today driving past the mosque in Blockhouse Bay, police were outside, and there was a kid with his dad offering chocolate bars (I think) to the officers. One of them gave him a hug. It was a nice moment.

We need to remember that despite this hideous act, there is plenty of good in the world too.

We need to not let the anger and fear consume us and cloud our judgement.

So F-ing Air New Zealand demonstrated their magnanimous compassion by pushing their air fares up to $800 one-way! (or did I just go blind and deaf from shock and outrage?) Whatever the figure, it was pure greed-driven profiteering. According to the news, the minister had to step in to tell them to quit behaving like dickheads. They have now dropped the fares to semi-normal levels, though Jetstar is still cheaper. So much for our wonderful national carrier!

Pretty much every statement you've made in your comment is factually wrong.

Don't believe what the mainstream media or the Twitter poster who started the whole debate last night have said - he's an incredibly angry person, and still today let his anger get in the way of reasoned facts. His language on Twitter is inexcusable - and hardly surprising he's now angry at the media for how the story was reported. The f word isn't something you continue to use in a reasoned debate.

His screenshot that started the debate showed $787 and $827 were *return* airfares priced from Christchurch - Auckland - Christchchurch (note they were not return airfares from Auckland) for travel today. This image was from Google flights, and was a selection of the most expensive flights options for that return trip.

At 11pm last night as the debate continued on Twitter, one way airfares from Auckland to Christchurch for today were available for $199 on Air New Zealand on multiple flights (4 to be exact), and Jetstar were offering pricing of $288 on one of their flights, and $340 for the other two.

Overnight Air NZ reduced the pricing of all fares to $139, and as of this morning Jetstar was still more expensive, but reduced their pricing to match Air NZ.

Don't let a good story get in the way of facts - prices were not inflated as a result of the incident. They were simply because of the normal operating model for any airline - there were very limited seats available both in and out of Christchurch (most flights both ways showed under 9 seats available on a 171 seat A320) and these were being sold at a higher fare class as is normal.

All airline have compassionate fares available for any death, and Air NZ's own PR issued this morning says that over 100 people had been given free travel (to immediate family) or discounted fares to friends and family.

The social media responses from Air New Zealand weren't great. They were pretty thoughtless and stupid but they weren't malicious or diberately trying to exploit the situation.

Totally agree that things aren't easy for anyone at the moment and we need to show a bit of understanding and tolerance for people who don't react perfectly in the situation. Neil's explanation of spark blocking websites encapsulates that for me.

Like others, I don't believe Air NZ deliberately pushed up the price of airfares, rather it was an automated process. What people seemed to have forgotten in the Twitter rage (and also on the NZ Herald article I read about it), Air NZ offer compassionate fares so you don't pay more than $169 for a single sector domestic flight.

Should also add that Air NZ announced on Friday that any flight to or from Chch over the weekend automatically became fully flexible (regardless of the type of ticket) allowing passengers to change or defer their traffic plans.

I have complete confidence in your knowledge and integrity and am happy to take your word for this and to apologise for flying off the handle. I would only say that I got the information from TV1 News, not a random tweet, and that is one reason for my anger. However, I had the TV on while using the computer and only heard the item with one ear so I was disbelieving at first. So I went on-line to check it and found the inflated prices. Then I blew up and posted.

Lets not get into picking on what people express and reacting in  negative ways.  They are entitled to their views. I to am upset about some of the things that are happening right across the board and disagree with some viewpoints. Many of us are sitting at home watching the media showing it all as far as they can. I have not watched his videos or read his document. The great shame of it all is that this so called human being who created all this horror is sitting there probably gloating over what he has done.  Unfortunately the media are doing what he probably wants .  I have several  thoughts on this. Should he be placed in solitary confinement for the rest of his life? This was my first thought No contact with the outside world in any way, do we really need to put him on trial so he can further promote his evil deeds or should we sit him in front of a Tv and let him see how people through out the world are reacting? Eventually some will want to try and rehabilitate  him. I know many would like to have him seen him killed on the spot. I like many others will need more time to analyse my feelings at the moments all I can really feel is numbness.  I am sure that some of the expressions of many of the posters on this forum including the Guns Forum feel confused like me. After a period of time when the shock has worn off perhaps this will be time to be more logical. My thoughts.

Agreed, they weren't great.. But in part that was because somebody trying to explain normal business rules and how airfares work in a very blunt manner to somebody who was clearly incredibly angry and wound up didn't go down well, and simply ended up with mob mentality Air NZ bashing.

I did donate though I didn't want to crow about it. I have also been strongly condemning any attempts to minimise the outrage or defend gun rights. I live a long way from Christchurch and have mobility issues so can't do much else. If I could I would go into town and volunteer to accompany any Muslims to the mosque who might feel afraid to venture out. Maybe someone else can do something with that idea. If anyone knows anything else I can do from home or on-line, please let me know. I am not on Facebook or Twitter.

That is truly terrible. Is there nothing that can be done? especially now.

Sure. I don't think any of this is a particularly big deal and it won't be the last time people go over the top on an organisation who gets things wrong.

The country is angry and not everyone will direct that anger in the right direction or say things in the right way. It's to be expected and a very human reaction.

Went to the Basin Reserve tonight for the vigil in Wellington.
Never seen the whole place filled to the brim including the field.
It was a sad and moving event that reflected on how abhorrent this event was and how much Kiwis reject it.

I f..king hate white supremacists and everything they stand for. They are not New Zealanders and should f..koff somewhere else as they are no longer welcome here.

There's no need to apologize. I have written some comments on social media that weren't the way I would normally express myself.

I am extremely emotional over this, going from near tears to rage. It looks like you are the same. It's a human response.
