MikeAqua: I never want to see Hone in government but I thought he was useful in parliament. Ditto the greens. It's good to have the fringe represented on the opposition benches. It introduces a perspective that otherwise wouldn't be there.

I actually gained a bit of grudging admiration for Hone from that email in which he lambasted his IM colleagues for focusing on cannabis reform instead of child poverty. The man is clearly passionate, he just doesn't seem to know how to work with others.

I am also happy he has gone and I hope he stays gone.

Also remember this is the guy that went overseas a couple of times for NZ government business and goes awol (france and another trip to OZ if my memory is correct).

I disagree.

The man clearly says passionate things, but, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, he would rather extend his Parliamentary perks as long as possible, including wasting money on a recount, despite the fact that the money that pays for those perks is provided in part by poor Kiwis, and despite the fact that it could be given to poor children instead.

Say what you want about the man but I wish more MP's spoke their mind, Atleast with Hone you a no BS answer on things, even if it's not what you want to hear

I don't say I agree with everything Hone says. But, I think has every right to be in Parliament.

I certainly wouldn't call him a political BS artist. He is definitely more someone who says what they think.

If you want a total waste of space, then look no further than Peter Dunne or David Seymour.

Those guys have no moral authority to be in Parliament at all. Yet, they cost the taxpayer considerably over a million dollars a year in salaries and perks.

Not bad when almost no one votes for your party!

Hear hear! Hone Harawira is not what is wrong with New Zealand politics. He is a voice, with as much right to be heard as any other. It is called democracy.

Many of the folks who vote for Hone see the overseas junkets and dragging out the perks as one of their own 'stickin it to the man'

He'll be missed by many around here as someone who was seen as a voice for the disenfranchised.

and i am guessing you don't know squat about the far north and the people who hone represented and the challenges they face? i do having been born up there and with whanau still living there

sure you're entitled to your opinion - but i would wager that he has done far more for more other people then you ever will

ps: you could of at least taken the time and effort to spell the name of one of largest towns in the far north correctly :/ - nicely done...

Harawira expressed concerns about the voting process in relation to his constituents and the judicial recount may provide further light on some issues:

nzherald: [Judge] Broadmore said in a statement that he would issue a further judgement "to record matters coming to my attention during the recount". He said these matters were of concern to the parties, but would not affect the final result. "Interested parties may wish to pursue those concerns though other channels."

I'd be surprised if there was anything major in there, but part of that process is examining any issues. I think it's probably a good idea that at least one recount occurs in a national election so any issues of interest can be dealt with.

Still a few days to go until the detailed official statistical report for the entire election is presented to parliament. I'm curious what the number of disallowed special votes will be. If I remember correctly there was a time long ago when you could enroll on the day and this was counted (eventually after checking) as a special vote, so it would be interesting to know if this idea is still current in some areas.

Sadly, it didn't backfire at all... Hone got paid for longer, which is what it was really about.
