KiwiNZ: I can see calls for his resignation. I ask myself what would he do if this were one of his Ministers or a member of one of the other parties.

I'm surprised I haven't seen calls for that already. Not that it will matter.

Thankfully.

He should be admonished and apologise, and that should be the end of it (Again assuming the facts are accurate and provided in correct context). We are a small country though and this will go on for weeks no doubt.

edit: He has already apologised. If the country has any sense it will now move on and focus on issues that affect more than a single person, like unemployment, Christchurch rebuild or the housing market.

He didn't "apologise". He gave her a couple of bottles of wine. Publicly I think this is not even close.

Lias: It's creepy, it's wierd, and given it's not just a repeat offense against this woman but apparently something he regularly does (cue footage of him touching the young girls pony tail) its bordering on being fetish like.

I worry about the fetish thing. If it's something he shows in public...

No wonder Bronagh keeps reasonably short hair!

My people would see this as an admission of guilt and apology. He was trying to make it right as far as I am concerned.

I'd also note he was there with his wife and she didn't have any issue with it, and having met her, she would have no qualms about speaking to him about it, if she did have an issue.

Doesn't feel like sexual assault to me, far from ideal but hardly worthy of 3 pages of discussion.

itxtme:  If he did it again, after being told not to, then we have criminal intent.

"I had remained professional for absolutely as long as I could and this time I put my hand out in front of me, a barrier between John and myself, and I said “No! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!” as I wagged my finger at him and he reluctantly backed away. During this visit he said to my manager “she really doesn’t like me pulling her ponytail?” and she responded “well, …no!”

then:

"I looked him in the eye and asked “is it self defence, with your security here, if I have to physically stop you from touching me?” and he countered, with a smile, “defence against what?”. He then changed the topic to the settling of his account and bid me politely farewell, but, as he motioned to leave and I turned towards the computer, he couldn’t resist that satisfying tug and once again he pulled my hair."

@aJobbins
Didnt read her blog, but looks like she made it clear she didnt want him to do it.  If she feels strongly about it, she should lay a complaint with the police.

Wow, that seems an over-reaction, especially as, as soon as the waitress asked him to stop, he did, then apologised.  Perhaps if she had said "please don't touch my hair PM" at the outset, the drama could have been avoided

It is simple, you keep your hands to yourself until invited otherwise.

Wow so much about nothing.....

Easy to see the image repeating and repeating in a gif. He did apologise for his actions.

It was probably an automatic type action on his part after having a daughter....I would hate cameras on me most of the day trying to pick up one mistake.

I think the point is not so much whether he apologised or not as much as that, as the Prime Minister, he should have known better. We teach pre-schoolers not to pull hair.

Well preschoolers normally pull hair out of malice in an aggressive or punishing manner, doesn't seem to me to be the same thing. Again not ideal but hardly something that deserves national press and discussion.

If this were to occur in a team I managed sexual harassment procedures would be taking place. I had zero tolerance for this. I believe as a society we should demand better from leaders and role models.

Read the article.  He was asked to stop in no uncertain terms and even though the context implies he was trying to be funny, he did it again.

Also, putting the sole onus on the waitress to correct someone else's inappropriate physical contact is absurd.  Classic victim blaming.
