MikeB4: People talk as if Maori culture is foreign to New Zealand when it is our original culture and should be embraced.

Really Mike. So tell me do you celebrate a Maori new year? And do you pray every night to the Maori Gods? Or do you only half embrace it then?

Yes we celebrate Matariki with our Grand Daughter

Then why bother commenting?

Oh wait, I know - "f&*ing maoris" (often followed by "they're wanting everything")

He was stating his opinion.  I was stating mine.  We're entitled to them, as you are to yours.  You don't need to put words into our mouths or be condescending.

I have little time for Matairiki, taniwha, or hakas.  I think there's more culture in a single Beethoven symphony or Shakespeare play than existed in NZ before Captain Cook arrived here.  I don't think that makes me unpatriotic, I'm very proud to be a NZer and of the multi-cultural society we have.

So you have spoken to the entire population and have determined that only 15% celebrate it.  That is impressive.

Well most people I know celebrate it on the night of the 31st December every year. (Added with lots of alcohol and big party.) Maybe my friends/family and I are all just the exception. I clearly don't hang out with the right crowd. Maybe I should stop hanging out with so many Kiwis.

What on earth are you going on about?

That's one of the most ignorant things I've read on GZ for a long while.

Wrong on so many levels.

You don't know the meanings of "culture" as a word, then presume - despite that lack of understanding - to assign and compare "value" to things that can't be compared.

It's an extremely arrogant position to take.

Celebrating Maori culture does not lessen other culture. Racism is not culture it is offensive and ugly. One can celebrate Shakespeare and celebrate Matariki.

Let me spell it out for you.

All Kiwis I know, including myself, celebrate new years at the end of the year. Not mid year. We dont celebrate the Maori new year. The "NZ culturally correct" one to celebrate is December 31/January the 1st. But hey, If you want to call me un patriotic for doing what most of us Kiwis do, then so be it.

Hmm, so appreciating great artistic works from your ancestral culture is ignorant. OK, if that's your opinion you're entitled to it.

It's one of those "fundamental difference of opinion" threads.  I have nothing more to add

See my edit above - where I expanded on what I said:

You cannot compare a work of art (a cultural artifact perhaps) with "culture" (a way of life).

This thread was locked by a moderator. As usual I won't go against the moderators on decisions like this, because they follow guidelines that I laid out.

I noticed over the years a certain number of mysoginistic, xenophobe, homophobe, racist commenters around here.

I have not explicitly listed these as a FUG breach because I still believe in free expression.

However I must remind you of this xkcd comic, which explains the right to freedom of speech very well:

In other words, if you write despicable things, prepare to be booted.
