You mention a good point here on all the back tracking. Why don't they take more time to consider their policies/actions? They seem to do a lot off the cuff without considering the consequences fully.

It cuts both ways, no party is flawless. Cut them some slack as its a new Govt after 9 years, same for Bridges, but in this particular issue, he needs to be fired and Labour needs to take ownership. I've seen FAR worse on Border Security TV

Just read that he is wanted in the Czech Republic for injuring a police officer!!!!!

How can NZ Immigration get this so wrong in the first place, and then when serious questions were being asked they stuck to their decision.

This guy came into NZ on a fake passport, deal drugs in NZ and is currently in jail.

Unbelievable stuff. He never deserved NZ's protection because he is a serious criminal here.

Someone has to resign.

An interesting point raised in an RNZ piece about this. Lees-Galloway has emphasised throughout that he was acting on information and advice from officials. If that information was inaccurate or inadequate, it will be argued that he wasn't to blame for getting it wrong.

So what is a minister's responsibility in this regard? How can a minister have confidence in the information provided? How can the minister verify that information? Blaming others seems like a cop-out, but how can you be sure that the others are doing their job properly? You have to be able to trust them. What is fair in a situation like this?

Its hard to say. If it was marginal, cut some slack, but while I voted Labour last time, its not marginal to me. Maybe he turned himself around, brought money in (not that money) maybe he gave info to nab others, Im unsure. Im not sure where JA's read between the lines comes in, but we need more info

My understanding is as he was discharged without conviction on the false passport, he could not be deported. There are two incidents where judges chose to be lenient on him which I believe had repercussions in terms of him not being automatically flagged for deportation.

Lets hope some common sense will prevail this time. I read somewhere quite recently that the Immigration Officials expected the Minister to deport this guy and the file was written and sumarised accordingly. Just wasnt read correctly.

I am sure the Governments spin doctors will be working their magic on this before it is released.
