IMHOsome  of the banners these people displayed in the protests were absolutely disgusting and did nothing to get the average kiwi onside with them. As an observer the signs depicting the PM as a horse, a dog or even just referencing her to being one of the above was appalling behaviour.

On this I completely agree.
The regime should be the target of their anger not personal attacks on its figurehead.

And as I’ve already posted, a better comparison would have been Castro.

However look at it this way

Our freedom of movement is restricted,

Our freedom of speech is restricted,

Under the auspices of the Climate Commission report we are about to have centralised economic control.

If it quacks like a duck……..

Our freedom of movement is restricted,

How?  You mean because of a global pandemic?

Our freedom of speech is restricted,

How?  It's never been absolute anyway.

Under the auspices of the Climate Commission report we are about to have centralised economic control.

We've always had centralised economic control, and it's always been done under the auspices of "common good".

Edit: And JDS is a bit try hard after TDS and it’s ongoing echoes.

That's hilarious.

Trump was a lair, a misogynist, a racist, philanderer, grifter, locked children in cages, provoked a coup attempt, and has spent the past 6 months since becoming a loser whining incoherently.

Meanwhile the same demographic who supported Trump in the USA (but small here) are whining about "ute tax", whining about "too many &^^ing maaairies  ramming their language down our throats", "climate change is a lie" and "Jacinda is just like Castro".

Now that's 100% Pure Deranged.

JDS fits.  It's perfect.

You're free to go anywhere or do anything within New Zealand. You're free to get on a plane and leave to go wherever you want. You're even free to come back again subject to some widely understood rules about quarantine, which will be lifted once a sufficient fraction of the population are vaccinated and they are no longer justifiable.

You say this freely on a private forum where such is not and never has been guaranteed even in the likes of the US with a constitutional right to free speech, not to mention the fact that the government didn't interfere in the protests on Friday - or any other protests, for that matter. You're absolutely free to go stand in front of the beehive and hold up a sign calling Jacinda Ardern a twat and the worst you'll get are some raised eyebrows. There is no practical restriction on your free speech: about the only thing that won't be tolerated would be a direct call to shoot someone.

Have already had for years. The ETS went into force in 2008. Kids spend that long in school. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997. Kids born then could already be parents with their own kids about to start school. None of this is a surprise. Farmers have had literal decades to get their heads around it, and now time has run out.

What you're deliberately missing though is that any taxes collected as a result of these new rules are going straight back into fixing the problems the old practices cause. Don't want to pay the tax on pollluting vehicles? Buy one that gets in under the threshold. Or, if you don't actually need a ute ... buy an EV and collect some free government money instead.

Wow! Pigeonhole much?

Anybody with a different opinion must be this (in your view).

Re-examine my post about why the PM is more like Castro than Stalin (comrade speech) not ”just like Castro”. Populist, charismatic and taking people with them.

Edit: Added ‘speech’ to clarify.

Maybe she is more like Kennedy than Stalin. Why pick a dictator to measure her against? And you talk about other people pigeonholing!

Yeah. Not sure Kennedy ever belonged to Socialist Youth.

Sorry this is getting way OT. Serves me right for venturing into the Politics forum I guess. Won’t make that mistake again.

Well 2/3 of that applies to most PMs NZ has had in recent memory.

Exceptions being (IMHO) Hugh Watt, Bill Rowling, Geoffrey Palmer, and Bill English.  A couple of examples there of people who were eminently capable - but "something" was missing.

"Taking people with them" is an attribute of good leaders.  Charisma seems to be an essential attribute. "Populist" OTOH tends to be thrown around by opponents when a leader is "popular" - but not "populist".  I'm trying to think of a "populist" centre or left politician - but nope, populism seems to be always be aligned with policies inciting bigotry and blame, "tough leadership is needed for tough times" "to make our nation great again".

Comparing the PM to Stalin or Castro - regardless of your "more like" proviso is as inane and disingenuous as comparing centre right politicians in this country to being "more like" Mussolini than the other fellow who can't be mentioned.  Zealots from any side sometimes resort to hyperbolic nonsense.  Disappointing to see you joining in.
