This is slightly off the topic directly, but I have a fair amount of dealings with Christchurch businesses, I am unsure if the right thing is to pass on sympathies during first contact, or not say anything and respond if it comes up? I don't want to be insensitive in either direction. Expressing sympathies seems so woefully inadequate.

I watched on television last night as a tv3 reporter apologised to a family member and hugged them. To me it didnt look right and I cringed a little.

I am not sure what needs to happen, but there is only one person who really needs to apologise, and I would like to see a national day of mourning declared ASAP.

I am an Australian who has lived in New Zealand for 40 years.

I grew up in post-war Australia, during the era of the White Australia Policy.

Not acceptable, but least this was an honest description of the policy. 😕

I voted Yes in the 1967 Australian referendum (Aboriginals):

DO YOU APPROVE the proposed law for the alteration of the Constitution entitled - 'An Act to alter the Constitution so as to omit certain words relating to the People of the Aboriginal Race in any State and so that Aboriginals are to be counted in reckoning the Population'?

This was endorsed by 90.77% of votes cast, having the immediate effect of including Aboriginal Australians in determinations of population, and also empowering the Federal Parliament to legislate specifically for this racial group.

Apparently, 50 years ago, 9% of the population still did not think that Aboriginal Australians were real people. I wonder what the numbers would be if the referendum was held now? 😕

I work for a company that was directly impacted by this event. A co-worker is one of the fatalities in this event - a public profile here. I knew of his disappearance since Friday afternoon and there was a long wait for news over the weekend. I can't say much more but looking at the number of victims you will probably know someone who was involved or a friend of a friend.

Say whatever you feel right when you feel right.

In the end in the example of the retailer I contacted who I had prior dealings with and wanted to make a further enquiring, I simply expressed I hope everyone was safe and coping under the circumstances. Both saying something and nothing felt wrong, for different reasons.

When I got sick a few years back, the last thing I wanted was lots of people contacting me to coo and make meaningless but undeniably well meaning comments, I more or less just wanted to be left alone, more because I needed the energy to get better and it was easier to not spend more time thinking about it than required, but everyone is different. I guess erring on the side of "nice" is probably the safest way to go.

We don't want this people to go under their rock - they will continue to grow there. They have to be exposed, because only light can eradicate this.

We don't want this people to go under their rock - they will continue to grow there. They have to be exposed, because only light can eradicate this.

This, plus, honestly, if you think these people give a toss about how many people turn up for a memorial, then you are mistaken.

It's not like if 10,000 vs 100,000 turn up it would stop them doing it again.

Go, if you wish, to support those people who are affected, or to help with your own healing process.

Yes - frustrating his hope and expectation to go out in a blaze of glory.

I haven't read much of his manifesto, but was this indeed his indicated preference?

I had wondered if being captured alive will actually be more beneficial for his 'cause' than if he had died in the process; this way he will be subject to a trial and all the attention that this brings - a great platform to further push his messages (imagine how this risks being drawn out and turned into a circus - it's going to be tricky to manage this). And then his on-going incarceration (which I assume will last until he dies of natural causes) will mean he'll remain an immediately accessible touch point for the far right, much like this cretin referenced (and claims contact with) Anders Breivik.

I don't believe he intended to go out in a blaze of glory at all. He was obviously prepared to, however, he gets infinitely more infamy as a result of being alive, and I believe this is what he wants.

When he was rammed, if he wanted dead he could have started firing his weapon and police would have been forced to kill him.

He knows there is no Death Penalty in NZ or Australia, so he knows taxpayers will have to wear the burdern of his trial costs, likely infinite appeals for a variety of reasons, and the costs of incarcerating him here or in Australia, for the remainder of his life.

In terms of closure for the victims, I believe a trial whilst traumatising for them, would be best perhaps, but his sentence (the chances of which will be life without the possibility of parole - die in prison) should be served in Australia. I feel it would be grossly unfair for the NZ Taxpayer to wear this cost.

He's an Australian national and I highly object, as a tax payer, to footing the bill for housing him (which will likely cost significantly more due to his offending type) for what is possibly going to be 60 years.

If we foot the bill, I would support subcontracting it out to a Thai MaxSec Prison, which would cost a fraction of the same thing here. I don't want him on our soil.
