If anything, I'd support it being legalized for terminally sick people. Everything else is just background noise.  Tax revenue will be lost entirely by compliance costs (or even worse), check out the numbers in places like California etc.

Police will still need to police it. What will spend having a referendum and the related waste of time and energy when our politicians should be concentrating on 'real' issues, will be immeasurable.

Continue to respectfully disagree but don't want to drag it out here. Maybe we should take it to the drugs thread.

It's a thread specifically discussing drugs!? Anyways, don't worry about it.

I think there is a 'trickle up' effect. Legalising pot is not about the relatively small numbers who want to lie around and smoke it all the time. It is about a more just society and focusing resources on real problems. The spinoff for every Kiwi is better and more effective policing, less clogging of the justice system with inconsequentials, elimination of marijuana as gateway drug since people no longer have to go to criminals to obtain it, reduced gang income to fund other illegal activities, increased tax income to fund things we all benefit from, and much, much more but I don't want hijack this thread more than I already have.

Also tax the pus out of it as another source of revenue for govt.

From Wikipedia about Portugal

"The drug policy of Portugal ... maintained the status of illegality for using or possessing any drug for personal use without authorization.

However, the offense was changed from a criminal one, with prison a possible punishment, to an administrative one if the amount possessed was no more than a ten-day supply of that substance"

Marijuana didn't case any problems, but heroin has. "Injectable" drugs cause the spread of HIV.

From the same page:

"In Portugal, recreational use of cannabis is forbidden by law; also the medicinal use is not yet officially recognized (there is debate and legislators have proposed bills in the Portuguese Parliament).

Portugal signed all the UN conventions on narcotics and psychotropic to date.

With the 2001 decriminalization bill, the consumer is now regarded as a patient and not as a criminal (having the amount usually used for ten days of personal use is not a punishable crime) but repression persists.

One can be sent to a dissuasion committee and have a talk or must pay a fee.

According to the libertarian think tank Cato Institute, illegal drug use among Portuguese teenagers declined after 2001, and 45 percent of the country's heroin addicts sought medical treatment."

If correct, then this alone possibly justifies legalisation of marijuana for recreational use:

In states that have legalized cannabis, binge-drinking rates have fallen 9% below the national average, and 11% below states that don't allow the sale of recreational marijuana, according to the note. Adults in states with legal cannabis binge drink an average of 13% fewer times per month than those in states without legal recreational marijuana.

"This work builds on our prior assertions that cannabis acts as a substitute social lubricant for consumers," Azer said in the note.

"As cannabis access expands, we expect further pressure on alcohol sales, given this notable divide in consumer consumption pattern," she added.

What percentage of Kiwi's smoke pot on a regular basis?

That's an opinion piece, where is the data they based these conclusions on?

Raises more questions than answers.

A 2014 Study on Intimate Partner Violence( IPV) and Substance abuse showed that if either or both partners smoked MJ, the overall incidence of IPV was less than a control group of partners who didnt smoke MJ.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4282761/

Alcohol, OTOH, just scales out of proportion with IPV.

What's the relevance of your question as to % of NZers who "smoke pot on a regular basis"?
(define "regular" and how you're going to get an accurate survey of participation rates in an illegal activity).

I believe the data was extracted from CDC surveys.

Life invariably raises more questions than answers.

In a 2012 Horizon Poll, 540,000 people in that year, 70,000 daily.

https://horizonpoll.co.nz/page/203/540000-using-marijuana-in-past-year

However, I'd say that number is less than is really out there, as possession or using MJ is a criminal offence, would you freely give any information to any Tom Dick or Fred purporting to be a "Poll" about ones illegal consumption habits ?

Then there are people like me who don't because it's illegal but would on occasion if it was legal.

Hey, nothing wrong with it.. every person has their pet "vice". As long as there is no direct impact on others, I see no issues on how each person lives their life.
