Just in: the minister has done an about face and that guy is gonna be deported.

Hopefully this time he actually read all the info supplied to him.

This affair has been a comedy of errors, the Minister should step down now.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

One thing's for sure, National will be re-milking this for all it's still worth.

Rightly so. It started off as a WTF issue, and its declined from there. She needs to step him down.

I am so disappointed with JA on this. He clearly screwed up due to not doing his job with the diligence needed. He should be stood down for at least 6 months.

NZ has no confidence in him.

"I don't know every single detail of the Immigration Act... I didn't look at that and say 'aha, he should be an excluded person.'

Wow. If I was appointed to that role, my first task is knowing the Act inside and out. Seek clarification on anything I don't 100% understand.

Basic stuff. More to come from this I would say.

@Bluntj I also believe the Minister should resign but to say "NZ has no confidence in him" is a leap you cannot make with a lot of data.

She makes a good point; Sroubek is becoming the Kim Dotcom of 2018. Perhaps we should hold the Labour government minister to the same standard of accountability as the National government ministers were, i.e. a bit of blushing and at the end of the day I thnk Nuw Zilinders are more concerned about snapper quotas.

The two are not remotely comparable. This is ministerial failure in its simplest form.

i would think that he has good grounds for an appeal , what has changed since he was allowed to stay, there is no new evidence that would make the first decision wrong, he was allowed to stay on the same evidence that now gets him deported.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The more I read the worse the original decision looks.  The Minister of Immigration is one of few ministers actually charged with directly making decisions that can protect NZrs.

I think he didn't take this particular decision seriously enough, although he admits he had some doubts.  Makes me wonder how many other decisions he skimmed over.

On balance I think he should lose the portfolio.  But seeing as JA found it difficult to sack ministers for dishonesty and violence, I can't see sacking anyone for sloppiness.

I'm trying to remember who Key sacked and why ..

- Richard Wurth for being a creep;

- Phil Heatley for charging a bottle of wine on his govt card;

- Nick Smith for making incorrect statements about some past dealings with a person in relation to ?ACC?;

- Collins was ?stood down? while that dinner was investigated, then reinstated

- Aaron someone who said "Don't you know who I am" to a waitress

She did, albeit not as soon as she should have. The examples are not sloppiness they are dodgy, misusing taxpayer funds. lieing, and bullyish. I feel there needs to be action, but you can guarantee he will be dotting two i's and two t's next time
