Rikkitic:

Someone sent me an interesting opinion piece in The Hill in which a conservative commentator conceded that CNN was right about everything. What I really enjoyed though was this excerpt: "This is an unbelievably bad deal. It could only have been devised by the type of man who would lose money as a casino owner."

I actually think the MOU is a good deal

EDIT:  For USA, Iran, and globally

"They" as in both Iran and the US?

In this context I meant that everyone knows the US is not meaningfully attempting to reign in Israel. For one thing, Trump and Netanyahu are soul brothers who both like to commit crimes and being the leader is what is keeping them out of prison, regardless of whether Trump yells sometimes. And even if that were not the case one step towards cutting Israel off and whole bunch of extremely wealthy hardline Zionists would quietly begin letting everyone know where the donation money was going for November.

It's a good deal, in the same way travelling salesmen Trump being caught with the shotgun toting farmer's daughter got a good deal when her Iranian father gave him the choice of being killed or marrying her.

Unfortunately in this shotgun wedding, he's the salesman's entire company into the deal.

Iran has frequently threatened to close the strait in response to sanctions, especially around 2011 to 2012.

The first documented instance of Iran actually imposing fees or mandatory Iranian-controlled insurance is this year, long after the Obama administration, and under Trump.

Under the widely accepted interpretation of the law of the sea, the Strait of Hormuz is an international strait. Ships have a right of passage without fees or prior permission.

Note that Iran has not ratified UNCLOS, but it has not historically attempted to override this regime with fees or exclusive control claims, until Trump.

In April, Iran began imposing transit fees reportedly reaching $2 million per ship or $1 per barrel of oil. This is the first time Iran has openly demanded payment for passage through the strait. Again not until Trump.

This month Iran requires all vessels to carry Iranian‑approved insurance, free for 60 days but explicitly reserving the right to charge fees afterward. This is the first documented instance of Iran asserting a quasi‑regulatory authority over transit.

In other words mob style "shake down" insurance.

I secretly think Trump admires these mobster like moves by Iran: "Game recognize game."

This month Trump said Iran’s current leaders are "strong, smart… actually they’re smarter than the first and second group." and Iran currenly "has to have some [missiles] because other people have some"

Agree

Leaning on Iran (so my next won war and gold standard negotiations can be with you and Hezbollah) is the obvious move toward a peaceful Middle East. Having said that the ME was peaceful prior to USA/Israel starting this war, that leaves Israel as potentially the only acting evil.

Its not clear if ship owners paying for any such Iranian Insurance would be in violation of the UNSC "snap back" sanctions of 2025, that forbid financial dealing with entities of the IRGC...

Until the Sec Council lift these and counties lift their domestic sanctions, Ship owners would likely be in violation of local laws...

TBH, This conflict was the combination of a number of events that in reality probably made it unavoidable,

Oct 7 set the scene, and the subsequent invasion of Gaza emboldened Israel,  The 2024 pager attack, also emboldened Israel's sense of power in the region.  and given BiBi is a Trump whisperer all his Christmases came at once at in November 2024

Trump's re entering the WH in 2025, and the perceived successful  "regime change" in Venezuela emboldened him to go all in to try to reshape the ME...

Trump has now burnt thru a whole bunch of diplomatic capital he had with the Gulf States,  and he really needs to  "stick the landing" of the current MoU, Israel's elections in October will also play hugely into how this ends...

Trump needs gas prices to come down, so his beloved stock market can go up ...solidifying the MoU  is the only way he can make this happen

The Iran frozen assets (i.e.their funds) will be handled by ESCROW. Fine, except the ESCROW will be controlled by the US, i.e. Trump. Thats not ESCROW as I understand it

Brent at under $74 USD/bbl is a welcome thing to wake up to today, it will be interesting to see if it stays there...

People are running round saying that Chinese demand has fallen away and will never return,

China ( like everyone else) survived this crisis by leaning on their SPR... ( its huge 1.4 billion bbl est.)  so to take 6-7 m bbl/day out of it was certainly  doable for the 90 days of the SoH being closed.

The price of oil going forward is going to be determined by how fast everyone wants to refill their reserves, The IAE estimate that the closure led to about 1.4 billion fewer barrels being shipped out....

However on the supply side, the Gulf states will be facing huge billion 4 holes in their government accounts for lower oils sales, so they have an incentive to pump as much as they can to help recover their loses.

Not just the loss of sales, but also damage to infrastructure. A bunch of people were killed in an explosion in Qatar a couple of days ago as they tried to restart their gas processing plant.

My mommy didn't raise no dummies. Iran can get free money, and grief the US.

Naughty Trumpty Dumpty has an fetish for far-flung precarious ledges.

Iran will wait till all the king's horses and all the king's men leave for other shores in 60 days.

From Lloyd's of London: "Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority is imposing mandatory, Iran‑approved insurance for all ships using the Strait of Hormuz — free for 60 days, but with fees likely afterward"

Hello a new long‑term leverage problem for others to solve.

I think even Trump supporters will agree: keep Grandpa away from the workshop, and leave it to the Grim Reaper's imminent arrival.

Perhaps a Trump trophy should be given out yearly for "Trumpty Dumpty dunder head achievment" award. It's a fitting legacy.

Marco Rubio in a nutshell: "Oh God! Why am I being thrown under the bus! Whatever. Fine. No one cares if the bullies extort money from nerds when we leave. Just don't kill the nerds on camera."

Rubio today, actual: “What we’re interested in is whether or not ships are moving. If ships are moving as they should be moving, then that’s what we’re going to judge. If that stops, then we’re going to have a problem.”
