"The offence of bribery is set out in section 216 of the Electoral Act 1993. It is a corrupt practice offence and carries a maximum penalty of up to two years imprisonment and/or a fine up to $100,000 for a candidate, party or registered promoter, or $40,000 in any other case."

I wonder if that could be seen when offering National $20.00 a week Tax returns in April

That's a bit of a laugh

A guy in J Colemans electorate offered money to vote national news item in the Herald

I'm afraid my belief in people is a lot stronger than some people who tend to think less of others. Perhaps I'm a dreamer but I have a strong belief you give people education and confidence and they will respond well

No you're right.

Some of the neo-liberal and conservative lexicon / memes presenting opinion as if it was fact, like "if you make welfare too easily available, people won't want to work" or "if you provide support for solo parents - it just encourages them to breed" belong back in the 19th century or earlier.

As in every demographic, there will always be the ones to bleed the system, and as mentioned here, to breed the system. The key is, is that endemic, or just the usual fringe element? I'd hope it was the latter.

Like many quirks of human social behaviour - we reap what we sow.

One thing that seems to be common across the human race, and probably as a (selfish gene) survival tactic, is to breed more when living under stressful conditions.
