I dunno , he'll be round the u-bend soon enough now he's resigned.

The contenders are preparing their positions and the fight will not be pretty.

My understanding is that he hasn't actually resigned. He has just expressed that he currently intends to resign in August.

And therefore by a simple process of elimination we know that he will not be resigning in August.

Of course he's gone. The process to elect his successor has started. He's already yesterdays news.

So what will Johnson do next, go back to work in media, retire to speaking circuit ?

One thing of note is how people from countries with Presidents don't understand how Johnson could be replaced.
It is a nice feature of Westminster like system that you can move leaders along if they lose the support of their peers.

Australians of course wanting to outdo everyone did take this to excess, but its a nice safety valve.

So often those promoting dropping the crown propose an elected President. Shudder

That view has a solid logical basis.

We wouldn't need to have something like the American system, where the president is like a king (especially after Trump).

We could just have something like the Governor General now.

I do think any New Zealand republic should have something like an upper house.

I don't think there are enough constraints on executive power.

Why would we need anybody? Whoever the current PM is could be Head Of State.

I don't see how a second house would help. If the ruling party has control of both houses everything gets voted thru and if they don't nothing does.
