You appear to have missed a key word in the thread title, that is, unbiased.

Whereas ignoring polls that show Labour are irrevocably down the toilet is totally unbiased and neutral. OK, got it - just the same as the NZ media

The thread is not about the merits of any particular party, it's about where to get unbiased information.

Yup, sorry, straying badly off topic. I guess my point is that truly unbiased opinion is hard to find. The recruitment by the Herald of a strident socialist as a regular guest columnist today being a good example of this

I think it's inherently difficult to get unbiased political opinion because if you're interested in politics, you're likely to be biased. I think National radio NZ is possibly the least biased news medium at the moment

I don't think that's particularly true. I haven't formed a bias towards any parties yet. I have an idea of who I might vote for. But it is in no way secure. I think a lot of people are out there with the same problem or lack there of. I don't think this is really helping the cause though. Continuing the search still for more info.

But you're unsure of your intentions, so you're unlikely to offer advice. Those who are likely to offer advice and opinions are, in my experience, those who have well-formed opinions and are therefore likely to offer biased information. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just the way it is.

I read all the policy info for the main parties and form my party vote from that. The Electorate MP vote I review what the candidates have done and are saying and vote for the candidate I feel is best for the job.
My vote is often split across parties. I may vote say National for party vote and vote for say the Green candidate for MP.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

If you are likely to vote for one of the main parties, the point about considering the minor parties is a good one too. We are unlikely to get a single party government.

At a guess, if Labour forms the Government it will likely contain Labour/Greens/ManaInternet. Whereas if National forms a government it will likely contain National/Act/United, and possibly the conservatives if they get in. Who knows where NZ First will opt to align, and who the Maori party may support (although I suspect they won't be outside Cabinet in any government that has Hone inside Cabinet).

So you also have to consider:
- how much weight will minor party(ies) have in the government if the party you are voting for wins, and
- how sane/sensible are their policies.

I see www.onthefence.co.nz has been updated for the 2014 election now, apparently a good tool to help you see which parties align best with your views. I got a couple of questions in and left it, but might have another go later!

It's a very cool site.

There are only 17 questions and it only took me 10 minutes to complete.

Very interesting, it picked a completely different line up to what I'm planning to vote for.

It doesn't factor in political personality.

I'm not voting Labour this election because I don't believe they will work as a team in the interests of the country.

Constant leadership changes and in fighting have left me wanting something else.

I'm not voting Green because I just don't see any personality at all. InternetMana simply has a front man that grabs my attention.

Unthinking plonker? Someone who makes gross and insulting stereotypes about voters and political parties.

Critically engaged voter? Someone who votes for the party that most closely matches their values, ideals and what they want for the country, and lets others make up their own minds as to what parties stand for.

Looking through the results on the onthefence website just highlight to me the major weakness of representative democracy. There is no one clear party which represents the range of ideals that I hold. Sure it's a step in the right direction from totalitarianism, fascism, state communism and the like, but surely after 2500 years we could come up with a better working model than 'tick a box then go back to sleep'.

Here's your unbiased advice: whoever you vote for, politicians always get in.
