Kudos to the woman for speaking out, as how common is it for such behaviour in these circumstances to go unreported, whether it be relatively minor or something like rape...

Actually, she hasn't spoken out yet. She is hiding behind an anonymous post. She/He/It could be anybody at this stage. IF she/he/it is serious, then they should be reporting this to the police rather than trying to get political mileage from this, because that Left W(r)ing Blog is just that - a political blog, no more, no less.

Until such time as this becomes factual, I shall reserve personal judgement.

I think the fact that Key has apologised confirms that it's factual.

networkn: No I don't think it's assault, yes I do think it's inappropriate if she indicated she didn't like it, no I don't think it needs a national discussion unless it continues after today, and no I don't think there was any intent to be creepy or for it to be sexual.

It could be that he feels a need to touch someone's hair, as a social support thing. Or it could be a sexual fetish. In which case that GIF of him touching the little girl's hair would be even more inappropriate.

It all started after a meeting with THIS fella and he realised that the NZ public would never accept his preferred image. wink

Jeez, what a bunch of hysteria.

Sure, it seems silly and a little inappropriate (the pm should know better) but it is hardly the crime of the century.

It is PC gone mad to equate this to an assault.

It is 'nanny state brigade' type thinking that want to treat any case of personal space invasion as a crime.

Its nothing to do with that silly Nanny state escapism rubbish. It is about inappropriate uninvited behaviour from a leader and role model. It is wrong and unacceptable.

People apologise for making people uncomfortable even if they don't feel they did anything wrong.

He could easily dispute some or all of the facts, but apologise because he is sorry he upset her.

The girl is stupid for going to the media with this. When her name comes out it will be forever found on search engines and that would be a person I wouldn't employ. If he continually did it after she said stop maybe but he stopped. I don't really think anything different of John Key. Note I didn't vote for him at the last election either...

There are a bunch of potential reasons for it, some of which are creepy and some of which are pretty innocent to my mind. Until I see evidence to support the fact it's sexual, which given he was doing it in front of her, seems unlikely, I will not be making any suggestions otherwise.

Peoples lives get ruined over such speculation.

Yes, and I said it was inappropriate but to call this an assault is the same thinking behind nanny-stateism.

Acquaint yourself with the definition of assault.... Assault consist of an act intended to cause an apprehension of harmful or offensive contact that causes apprehension of such contact in the victim.

She said stop and he did it again. Read the blog.

And you rather not employ the victim...

It doesn't need to be sexual to be unwanted.

networkn: Well it took 2 pages longer than I predicted before the R word was mentioned.

Yeah, after posting that I had a feeling this would be leaped on! Feel free to infer I was comparing this situation with the "R word", whereas all I was saying was a power imbalance in a relationship can easily have a big bearing on whether a complaint is made (or even informing others of the issue), and this will relate to all levels of problems from the minor to the serious.

Well, it took five pages longer than I predicted before some of the most over-used phrases - "PC" and "nanny state" - got dragged into the debate!

I wonder how fair it is to summarise what Key appeared to do as simply a "case of personal space invasion"? I'd say that's minimising the seriousness of it, essentially comparing it to say someone who has no idea of personal space and simply stands too close - this may be awkward, disconcerting and inappropriate, but it's not likely to be in the same category as repeated hair-pulling!

Even your decision (deliberate or otherwise) to call her a 'girl' says something to me about your attitude (unless you do know that she was something like 16?). An example showing NZ really hasn't moved on that far from the "good ol' days" (when men could be men, and really it was all just a bit of playful fun) as I wish it had...
