Adding to the above, NZ retailers are also subject to the CGA and FTA which add considerable costs. While I would like to make a point that I am not defending the overall position NZ retailers have taken, they do have a point that their cost structure is higher than those overseas.  I expect retailers will move onto the next injustice and seek immediate legislative changes to level the playing field.

On the other point, technically GST revenue is not lost by the Government if a consumer purchases an item from a foreign supplier under the existing system, when that item is not available locally in NZ. But I think the overall point you’re making is definitely valid.

Again, I don't see this as a retailer driven issue, its a lost GST issue. The retailer commentary is better news though.

If the product is not in NZ, you will either

1. Buy overseas and we lose GST revenue

2. Buy here and we get the revenue

3. Don't buy the product. Unless you pay the $8 off the mortgage, or bank it on a 50 year term deposit, you will buy something else and contribute to GST revenue.

And, the vast majority of things we buy are manufactured overseas. It doesnt matter where you pick it up from (Bunnings or the courier), its been imported and consumed here. Forget the retailer angle, look at the GST revenue angle

We're only talking about the GST side of things because retailers and their lobby groups have moaned that it's the only thing stopping them from being competitive. Meanwhile:

I love how the NZ site has "seen it cheaper, ask for a deal!" along the top to really rub it in.

Yes, a big difference. Both include GST, we get ripped off, or more costs per unit here to absorb. What happens here is a brand will discount, then it won't,  I knew a guy that worked for NL. So, that makes it harder to compare. The moaning retailers moaned about it, but it won't really help them much. Any sale they lose to an overseas online purchases they will still lose, but at least the Govt, and that is us, will collect GST, and you or I who bought from overseas will still save money.

One day, offshore will become very mainstream, it's not now. Retail will drop a lot then, Briscoes cannot afford to have their annual 40% off sale every day of the year.

If you're going to pick and choose products to prove a point you should be fair - that TV is not a mainstream model so Sony clearly price it according to shipping costs and demand.

Lets look at something like the X85F range where pricing is identical in AUD and NZD - the 55" is A$1498 in Australia and NZ$1498 in New Zealand and the 65" is A$2198 in Australia and NZ$2198 in New Zealand. This means both TVs are significantly cheaper in NZ than Australia.

The 55" Sony A8F OLED is currently A$3195 in Australia vs NZ$2992 in New Zealand.

It was literally the first one I chose but OK. Also, your X85F is a 'deal' price vs what appears to be a regular sticker price in Aus.

The 55" Sony A8F OLED is $3,195 in Aus but the same model here is $3,598 and that is also a deal price. I am unsure where you got the $2,992 from.

In any case, the TV prices between here and Australia aren't anything to do with GST being collected on ALL imports. If you consume it here, you should pay GST on it, as GST is a consumption tax

Price was $2992 when I looked last night so has obviously gone up.

55A8F is still $2935 at Harvey Norman until Monday.

Pricespy shows pretty consistent retail history of around $1498 for the X85F across multiple retailers - it even dropped cheaper during the Boxing Day sales.

In terms of consistency of application; perhaps. Given the cost appears to outweigh the revenue generated, then unless there are other intangible benefits (i.e. levelling the playing field for retailers, which I am quite frankly dubious of) then it is a pointless exercise. This is of course a moot point given it's 1 OCT 2019 implementation date, so it's not worth arguing over.
