Bluntj:

My main objection is being labelled a coalition basher, which seems to be the norm if you disagree in any way with any of the Governments decisions.

Incorrect, although the opposite is most certainly the case. The level of emotiveness by some is laughable. With regard to your post, based on the oft repeated rhetoric here, it was clearly the standard bashing. Bash first, confirm accuracy later. You had subsequently advised of what you misread, and thats been acknowledged. So, no biggie. But you must surely see why we might take that opinion initially? Id live to debate the issues, but they are not important, its the A vs B that matters, and yes that does go both ways, but IMHO there is a clear slant the blue way. Admittedly blue are miffed at losing, red be happy at winning, but it would be nice to have an adult conversation about the issue and have a seperate bashing thread.

Here is an example of Immigration New Zealand double standards.

Sure, they may not have all the points needed for skilled immigration. But the family owns a flower shop, he works full time as a car salesman, is a volunteer firefighter.

Compare with the previous example of someone who shouldn't be allowed in the country in first place, lied to immigration, used false documents.

Is it fair?

It’s a shocker. It should have nothing to do with the fire fighting though. Noble as that is. That would just make it an emotive situation that another in his predicament could not fall back on. The couple has met all criteria except IIRC the business has not taken on as many employees as required. That’s one issue. What about his contributions, that they are self sufficient thereby adding to the economy. One metric means they are forced to sell up cheaply. You would think after the other debacle they would want to keep out if the news

It’s a case of it’s all gone swimmingly apart from this one metric. Review again and reasses. They may strip out the shop and that ends up with some in the unemployment queue

Similar to the family who owns a restaurant with a certain number of employees - just not the number the INZ wants...

Easy to criticise I guess especially when we are only being presented with one sides views. There are always two sides and the media tend to skew everytime.

We also know that the Minister can intervene should he feel the facts warrant it and this doesnt seem to be happening in either of the cases mentioned.

There is that, both sides.  My opinion based on the Sourek affair, is a lack of faith in INZ and the Minister. Plus, the head of INZ has the most skills and knowledge, but maybe more news might come to light.

Fairfax article has a very relevant quote from Immigration NZ

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/110484151/nelson-fire-volunteer-firefighter-faces-deportation

Immigration NZ manager Michael Carley said Webster and his family are all legally in New Zealand and that he and his wife's work visas are valid until July 6.

"They will have the opportunity to apply for further visas before then. There is no compliance action planned against the family as they're all lawfully in New Zealand."

No action planned against them. I feel this is an important detail left out of the Herald article.

Exactly what I was referring to....we never see both sides and allow the biased media to sway our opinions. So sad.

On a different story, there's a quite good article on NZ Herald about how Peter Thiel lobbied and was granted New Zealand citizenship - and how he "ghosted" the country immediately after getting his passport (in Santa Monica, CA instead of a ceremony in NZ, no less).

Was National blindsided? Was it intentional?
