National Party is campaigning on value capture taxes to fund infrastructure:

Stuff:The National Party says it will create a government agency to build big infrastructure projects, and will introduce a “value capture” tax.

Apparently this will not apply to Auckland light rail infrastructure because they don't believe in that project. The article lists CRL as something it might apply to. Not many examples. I guess it could be used for the new greenfields plans in cases where a new offramp is needed. Something like Puhoi to Wellsford would be too hard to attribute imo. Any guesses what projects this is being lined up for?

China and Russia 2.0 ?  We need more babies now !!!

At least China has a huge supply of empty apartments for these babies to buy when they grow up if they have not rotted in meantime.

Given economics they are going to have to pay people 'at lot' to have more babies and supply Government housing with extra rooms.

uh... he's right? If you make it super expensive to have kids, then people who want to have more kids can't afford to and stop having them.

There is so much to drag Luxon for, but this is by far the least interesting or correct thing to drag him on.

It's costing me circa $19K a year for daycare for one. We qualify for no assistance as things stand. I'd have more, but it's going to be close to financially ruinous.

At some point people have to accept we've made having kids insanely expensive given you need two working parents to service a mortgage for close to 30 years, and with the cost of everything else spiking, the answer is to find a way to make it cheaper or else your population collapses within a few generations.

The last I heard, the planet is not exactly at risk of population collapse. Take in some (more) immigrants desperate for a new life. Adopt some overseas orphans. There are plenty to go around.

Wow, OK, there's no issues with affordability for Kiwis who want to start families because we can just import people from somewhere else.

I mean if you're going to gaslight people about living costs, go big I guess.

I am not the one using 'population collapse' as a cudgel. Why the obsession with passing on genes? I am adopted and my dad was the greatest human being anyone could wish for. Let's take care of the people we already have before adding more.

Do daycares charge less if your kid is adopted? The actual cost of raising a kid, any kid is the point.

And I think you'll find 'taking care of the people we already have' involves making it easier for Kiwis who already live here to have families instead of just relying on migration to keep our population stable.

I am not arguing that having children is affordable. I am arguing that your claim of population collapse is ridiculous.

If you default response is always going to be 'just import more people from somewhere else' then sure, I guess you're right.

This is precisely the opposite of what conservative voices seem to do, for example, on abortion - "Save the foetus", but once the baby is born, nothing to help parents take care of babies, minimal (or non-existent) healthcare policies, no housing, low education investments, etc.

(Note I am not saying this is what National does but it's a common theme in other countries).

Worse, in the USA they also support the death penalty and the right to "defend" oneself with deadly force...even for trespassing.
