Hi There,

I have an edge router lite connected to a gigabit switch which is directly connected to my computer.

I was previously on gigabit plan with orcon and always got 0ms ping to local speed test web site since moving to Voyager 100/20 I get a 3-4ms ping on top of the trip to any location... why is this?

And interested if anyone else has the same problem.

I phone voyager they said it is what it is.

Our main point is you can't have 0ms (End of story) Different ISPs have different routes and different peering for sure

3-4ms is good and you should be very happy with that, 0ms is impossible. Maybe it used to be 0.4ms and was rounded down, but probably not because that's a very small amount of time.

At the low latency mark, Different browsers report differently.

Awhile back when i was testing it was something like this.

Firefox/Chrome - always 5ms

IE - always 0ms

Decided to click into this due to some interesting findings I had when comparing my (Voyager) connection to a friend's (Bigpipe) connection. I did actually see increased latencies to some NZ based speedtest servers in comparison, though practically identical to when comparing overseas. Figured it was a Spark vs. Voyager peering thing.

Use the windows app not a browser with speedtest. The browser only gets realistic results on slow connections.

Using the app, in Auckland on the north shore I get 1.4 - 2.2ms to any Auckland speed test server. They all report as 2 in the stats once the test is complete. Wouldnt expect any less since its going over my lan, thru a router and then whatever happens in the optical stuff.

ICMP Prioritisation

Modern routers have distinct processing paths, the processing path which handles ICMP generation is typically handled by the low powered generic CPUs in the router, and is not prioritised. ICMP can also be influenced by spikes in CPU usage, so loss can be caused by a spike in other control traffic handled by the generic CPU (e.g. BGP churn) and not a problem with fast path hardware based traffic forwarding.

ICMP generation is NOT a priority for the router – It’s an indication of response times, however not a definitive one.

If you’re not sure if the results you’re seeing are the result of congestion or something similar, then I would suggest you have a read of this great presentation from North America Network Operators Group on interrupting traceroute results.
