BNZ have a product called MarketView (http://www.marketview.co.nz/)

BNZ MarketView is a tool for understanding and measuring consumer spending behaviour. It is derived from BNZ's credit and debit card holders spending with retail merchants throughout the country.

So as a BNZ customer they take my spending data and then sell it to others to use and sell me more stuff. Man this makes me mad.

It will be aggregated data, not your personal details. This sort of thing happens every day.

Not to mention it's Flybuy's primary business model. And Google, Facebook etc etc

I assure you, ASB, ANZ, Westpac, and others do the same thing, just not as loudly.

That's where you're wrong. They're not selling your spending behaviour. They're selling an aggregate idea of what categories of product the collective [BNZ, Flybuys, and OneSmart customers] are purchasing and roughly where. This information is far too vague to identify an individual (especially as they apply the tried and true method of excluding any data points where there is not sufficient entropy to guarantee anonymity).

Read the fineprint on the paperwork you received with the credit card initially, you probably agreed for them to do this. Or at least, I know I certainly did when I got my National Bank card some years back.

I would imagine that there is no "opt-out".

But seriously, yeah, this kind of thing annoys me from time to time. But - it is not exactly clear what you are objecting to in this instance.

The sample data is probably only slightly higher resolution than that reported to an AGM. Have you knowledge of further detail they are offering to subscribers?

That said, the default attitude of many services which incidently have great data collections is..

There are plenty of situations where we consciously trade our data for convenience like google's services - but a lot of situations where it is not so conscious decision and sometimes grey use of data.

Wozniak expressed some unease in relation to cloud services last week, but the larger issue is a bit wider.

I don't see an issue with it as song as they are not selling your individual details. There is nothing in BNZ's product that would personally identify you. It's purely 'market level' data sourced from BNZ issued cards.

Privacy laws in this country prevent them from selling your personal details even if they want to.
