I'm trying to sort out an issue, previous flatmates claim that they didn't receive my rent (I was there for a very short time) - I sent through the supporting statement + a screenshot of the account I paid into and forwarded the account number they told me to pay into - all match.

But, they got the account number wrong in the email which means my payment went into thin air, since I've paid it into the account I was asked to I know it's not my fault but what actually happens when you pay into the wrong account? And what can be done to get the money back?

Contact the bank. They won't tell you who is the owner of this other account but might contact them. I once paid the wrong payee (a company) from my list and it took weeks for them to send the money back. But I knew who they were since it was from my list, not a one off payment.

My opinion is contact your bank. If the account didn't exist it should have been returned to you automatically, but sounds like the account does. The person who gave you the incorrect number should pay any costs as they made the error, so if it cost you, deduct those from you payment.

Your bank will go through the process of attempting to contact and other person and get the money back - but of course the other person has absolutely no obligation to do this.

The account it was paid into does have to return it, otherwise i believe it is theft if they refuse. They however can possibly claim costs such as bank fees. The OP probably has to go to the police if that happens, to get the account owners details.

That doesn't sound like a fun route to go down >.< - I'd rather say tough and get them to learn by not using the "Measure twice, cut once" rule.

Tell them you paid the $$ into the account number they provided, If they want the $$ then chase that account holder

Not your fault they gave you the wrong account number

Remember what happened when a bank paid $10 million into someones account, and they left the country, and had trouble getting the money back. But it was treated as theft. http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/25/man-who-ran-away-with-accidental-10-million-from-bank-sent-to-jail/ But the person who gave you the wrong account number should really sort it out.

There is a rather big difference between a bank employee accidently setting a $10 million overdraft instead of $100000 on the correct account and somebody using internet banking transferring money into an account.

as neither the owner of the account that paid the money, nor the owner of the account that received the money, the flatmates are unlikely to be able to chase this up themselves.  a person cant just go to a bank and ask for details of anyones transactions....

Then they should be more careful when handing over account details

Sounds like the sort of dopey rubbish too many people are doing these days.

The only thing they had to get right was the bank account number.

I hope they aren't training to be airline pilots....
