Last friday night someone pulled into a carpark beside my car while I was shooting some Aurora photos  and ran the side of their car against my rear bumper, causing significant paint damage and scratches into the plastic. Luckily for them, this was before some other damage was about to be repaired, so the marginal cost of their damage is cheap ($132.50)

They stopped, gave me their name, admitted liability (to me), phone number etc and I took down their license plate. Unfortunately when I went to ring them Monday morning to let them know how much the repair would cost (have quote from the painter doing the main repair and I'm only looking for them to pay that additional amount direct to the repairer), the phone number didn't work. I may have taken it down wrong due to damn smartphone.

I have found the guy on Facebook but can't send a message and he hasn't accepted a friend request. Carjam shows the licence plate on the car matches the vehicle and I have found his name mentioned in Chch half marathon results and in a news article about the family emmigrating here many years ago.

I believe he gave me the correct info...

So how can I track him down? I know 20 years ago you could hand over a few bucks at the post office to get details but not sure if that's the case anymore. I work at Telecom and his name or family name almost certainly exists in our databases but that's utterly out of the question (I only mention it to shut down anyone suggesting it).

If I can get in touch with him directly, he won't have to involve his insurance company and everyone wins. If I can't, then I have to lodge another claim and he'll be stuck with additional costs.

I also have multiple witnesses to the incident.

Cheers - N

Lodge a claim.  This is why you have insurance!

Could you try find him in the white pages?
In case you don't remember, the white pages is that strange book that appears once a year at your door with tiny writing, probably being used to light the fire or prop something up

probably depends on how unique his name is?

Thanks Jeff - I had just had the Post Office tell me they didn't do it anymore for privacy reasons... Hadn't trolled through the NZTA site as yet... Cheers.... Will try that if nothing else pops up in the next 24 hours (They say it can take 10 days to process and they weigh each application individually about whether to disclose the info or not)

Cheers - N

AS per above post, but you will most likley then need to search directories / whitepages to link the phone number.

Seems like you have most of the avalible details.

- I have lodged an insurance claim, but I can withdraw it and save us both time and hassle if I can get in touch with him myself

- I did give him my number

- I have tried the White pages... It's a unique name but the name doesn't show up at all in the directory listings.

Cheers - N

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Try looking on the Electoral roll in your local library. I used that to track down the address of a chick whose wallet I found.

Thanks for that - excellent idea and I hadn't thought of it...

Thanks again for the Electoral Roll pointer. I now have the address of 4 members of his immediate family (including 2 I didn't know about) and they're all at the same address... Of of the newly discovered brothers did have Facebook setup so I was able to send a message... I'll see if he notices that before door knocking.

Cheers - Neil G

I did not realise anyone can go and browse the electoral roll... I suppose it's necessary to have that transparency but it seems like kind of a privacy issue

It's interesting how having a physical copy is fine, but imagine if someone created an "address lookup" tool online using that data. There would be mass outrage.

Not hard to scan it in.  That's a little scary to be honest.
