How safe is Internet Banking?

Hello.

I am thinking of registering for Internet Banking with Kiwibank. However I thought I would enquire about how safe it is to put my mind at ease. Obviously with the amount of people that use it in this day and age, it must be pretty safe.

I guess I only run the risk of losing my money if I click on some dodgy links etc?

Just trying to put my mind at ease really.

I've been using it since... 2001? and have never had a problem (Westpac). So long as you always navigate to it yourself and don't, as you say, click any dodgy links, then you should be fine.

Been using it since 2006 with no issues. Hard to believe there is anyone left in the world not using it...!

Depends how you look after your PC and making sure it's clean from key loggers and other crap

Anyhoo, if you are not trolling, yes it is safe. Just remember, Kiwibank will never send you an email asking you to reset or disclose your password from a link within that email (much the same way that Microsoft will never call you to tell you your Windows is broken).

I've been using internet banking every day for more than a decade.
No problems experienced.
I very rarely visit a physical bank.

Using a money machine is much more hazardous than internet banking from home.

Also, be very wary of using Internet Banking (or anything else you want to keep secure) on a public system (e.g. a computer at the library) where you're at the mercy of whoever looks after the security of that machine.

And similarly, be wary of using it on a public/free WiFi connection... again, you're at the mercy of whoever is running that system. Highlighted on TV a couple of times is spoofing techniques, where a bad guy sets up there own free WiFi near (e.g.) Maccas, pretending to be Maccas Wifi, but instead harvesting all traffic.

Been using it since 2001 too, also most banks offer a extra/second level of security at sign in.
Such as Netcode for Asb, Netguard for bnz, highly recommended if you are worried about security.

But yea only use trusted pc's, make sure its clean and regularly scanned as you would/should anyway.

Hey mate. Not a troll just making sure before I jump into it.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Yes I would only log in on my own Wifi network and would never use a public computer.

Looks like I will give Kiwibank a ring later then and get it sorted!

As Huntakillaz mentioned, most banks have some form of secondary authorisation. Kiwibank have this in the form of security q&a and you only supply part of the answer and it differs all the time. This makes internet banking very secure, even if your primary credentials are compromised. ASB have a much better system (IMO) with NetCode where you have a unique code supplied by SMS (Or physical token) that expires frequently.

My Mum and Dad use internet banking and have for a number of years and they are in born in the early 40s,

They never visit a bank anymore
